My favorite are the hybrid 'How the Fuck' and 'Boner' combination commanders. My theory is that their OCD and related mental illnesses carries them through their careers but there is usually a trail of destruction and broken dreams behind them.

I Was lucky enough to get a 10 in my last unit AD! Great Officer, great man, who really cares. Then he lost his mind cause soldiers suck sometimes and all I wanted to do was hug the poor man -- but I didn't lol. I promise not to give you that sympathy hug until the going away dinner. I had a #2 assigned to me. He made it 4 months before he was "reassigned" as the assistant to the assistant S3. Bear in mind this is in the Guard, where he was only there a few days a month....

Worked for several of these types.
Had a hospital commander who was aware of everything that his staff was responsible and could probably do our jobs as well as we did. (He had been a POW during the Korean War)
One of the doctors repeatedly refused to to meet military standards (this was right about the time "MASH" came out).
The CO called him in to inform him that he (the Colonel) was going to give the doctor a summary court-martial. Doctor (not sure why he thought he knew military justice rules) said there had to be an Article 15 first. CO corrected the individual and held the summary court-martial. Doctor didn't realize that he had just killed his professional career as a summary court-martial is a federal offense and he can no longer practice medicine.
Another CO was at the other end of the spectrum. Really had no clue how to command. I had prepared documentation to show that the unit had a two-year backlog of work and we needed to go our higher HQ for additional personnel to reduce the backlog. He would not forward it because it would make him look bad. Later, someone referred 78 allegations to the USAREUR IG and the CO was offered early retirement or court-martial.

Knew a number two; only person I know of that never made it past 2LT when eighteen months was normal promotion time. Supposedly, he commented before his ETS that he was going to stack arms. Response from an NCO, "Never knew you picked them up".
Had one whose nickname was "Ready, Fire, Aim". After spending time briefing him on what to say at a conference, heard nothing from him that resembled what he had been fed.
CG asked what France's involvement in NATO was and my original one page came back from my boss to provide more detail. Several rewrites wound up four pages. CG's response, " I asked for the time and you built me a clock".
