I believe there's only one way out of this situation. No one in North Korea wants to be there under this rule. We should all go in, take him out, remove the border and the South Korean President becomes the new Korean president. And now North Korea turns into a modern, contributing, safe, and prosperous nation. Families will finally be reunited and free. Pretty soon we'll be forced into this.

Have you ever been there. I have twice and my father before me at the Chosin. It's not just the North Koreans, you have to think about the Chinese too. Screw them and let rot, when the people get fed up enough they will deal with it. The DAMN place is not worth another single American life.

I want to make sure that I am understanding what you are proposing.

You propose to send in a coalition (I would hope) of world force, into a Nuclear Armed nation to take out a leader that purportedly kills members of his cabinet for nodding during speeches, and kills family members in his military leadership? This action would be backed by a nation's military who has been stretched for 15 years of deployments and now, more recently a shredding of numbers? This is on top of a desert warfare mentality that would need to rapidly switch it's focus back to conditions that are more common on the Korean Peninsula.

Additionally, where would the PRK allies fall in on this. Specifically China who might see this as a threat to their security and interests, as well as our growing tension with Russia.

I agree that PRK is a big irritation, and perhaps the answer is targeted, precision attacks and increased sanctions. But no, I don't think the situation has grown quite to the place where an invasion is warranted. I am quite sure that PRK, more specifically Kim, will readily use whatever NBC arsenal it has. This action would cause immense casualties.

The United States has waited to long to take real action. Every min we wait, they get stronger and more powerful while collecting nukes. Sanctions and diplomacy have obviously failed. The U.S. needs to come up with a different plan on dealing with North Korea. There will come a time where north korea isn't bluffing on its threats and like always we will also do nothing. There is little to no real infrastructure so invading North Korea after casualties will still cost hundreds of billions of dollars to modernize the people and bring them close to the level of prosperity in South Korea

While I might agree with the idea of liberating an oppressed people. We did that with Iraq. Is Iraq a better place now because of what we did? Is the world a better place? Also, how do you know how the populace feels about living there? On average, a portion of the population doesn't agree with the policies that take place within the US. Should some foreign power have the right to come in and liberate us from what they perceive to be our oppressors?

Considering our record on "liberation of other countries" we may wish to refrain from trying that again, what it does appear to be for me is China getting tired of financially holding up North Korea and being responsible for any act they perform so the Iran Nuclear Deal seems like a decent fit for North Korea. Short answer - No! You are making an assumption that "no one in North Korea wants to be there".
The level of brainwashing accomplished with the general populace is unprecedented and rivals or exceeds that in George Orwell's "1984". Think about this - During WWII, thousands of Okinawan citizens committed suicide by jumping off cliffs (parents threw their children off or held them while they jumped) because their military told them the Americans would rape, torture and slaughter every man, woman and child they captured. That happened after probably less than 10 years of brainwashing. The North Koreans have been getting more aggressive brainwashing reinforced by torture, deprivation and murder for 60 years more or less, and most of them absolutely believe what their government tells them. We don't want to get in the middle of that unless/until we have no choice.

I think we should. But, there is a larger issue at stake. Chinese involvement would be a big problem in this endeavour. They may bring forth their military and propaganda machine to bear in defense of this regime. Before we make this decision we need to be prepared for this contingency, both at home and throughout the world.

While the idea of deposing the leaders of the North and replacing them with the leaders of the South seems like the ideal solution it lack the nuance and stealth that this matter needs to be handled with. The immediate threat from the North is the ballistic missiles launched from a sub. What should be happening is that when of their 70 odd subs sally's into the open ocean it might encounter a serious mechanical problem, flood and be lost with all hands... it happens and no one really knows why! Just bad quality control on those diving valves... just say'in...

There's not enough juice in this for the squeeze. It would cost trillions of dollars to merge the two countries, not counting the cost of the war. Also, have you noticed how close Seoul is to the DMZ? Millions of innocent lives right there...the carnage would be unthinkable. We may have to take the fight north some day, but we should only do so as a last resort, and not do so in a cavalier manner.

The biggest issue that I see with finally taking out NK is not necessarily China (I don't see them falling on their sword for little Kim). It's that any large scale military action would devastate SK and destroy the 60+years of economic and social progress they have achieved since the end of the Korean War. The ROKs would definitely would not be down for that, and without their complete cooperation, any war against the north is simply not feasible.

The United States government is already way too financially overextended as it is, and our military is stretched even thinner than our budget. Plus, what little information comes out of North Korea paints the picture of their government modernizing their military with technology and systems that equal ours. If the USA went to war with North Korea again, for any reason, it would be a long, protracted standoff. Just like the 1950's.

The North Korean government currently poses no major threat to the people or territory of the United States. Look at North Korea before you decide to send our forces up there. It's a very difficult place to operate, lots of mountain ridges, very canalized terrain. The DPRK has had decades to fortify their home turf. Taking away their ability to strike the RoK or Japan will not be easy. I don't necessarily have the answer, but think first before you decide to go stomping into that place.

Sp4 Byron Skinner…NKorea is a rather complex issue that appears not to be understood by US Intelligence…First to Break Down the issues. None of the five alleged nuclear test by NKorea has been verified by any independent source. Og the "ICBM's" tested only one could maybe be called a success. The problem is the Nkoreas are using the same Russian Topol 1 that has ailed for the Russians and The Chinese in the DF 21 family of fictions missiles…Nkorea serves a strategic purpose for China because it serves as a buffer to South Korea which is allied with the US. The Chinese really don't want a SKorea on its border even though economic ties between SKorea and China have become very strong in recent decades. Finally Nkorea is a Chinese problem, let China deal with it. The US doesn't have to police every rogue state in the world. The countries historically have run their course and if not invaded will self destruct. NKorea deserves far less attention then it is getting.

I think that South Korea is more than capable of resolving the issue on its own. They could move into North Korea - without US military support - and remove KJU from power. Not having US forces in North Korea would lessen the possibility that China would get involved. The problem really isn't in "defeating" North Korea's military - the larger problems are:
1. Stopping the nuclear weapons from being used and securing them from being distributed to other hostile actors.
2. Stopping the chemical weapons from being used and securing them from being distributed to other hostile actors.
3. Resourcing (food, water, medical) the millions of refugees and starving people in North Korea.

It would initially be a significant drain on South Korean resources, but I think over the course of the 50 years following the reunification of Korea, the North would be a global contributor rather than a drain. The problem is that no one is currently willing to support it for 50 years.

If there was reunification, is the South ready for the financial impact on their country? When the wall came down in Germany, the West was drawn down by the economic demands shortfalls of the east, plus the lack of work ethic (compared to the west) in a significant number of workers.
In this case, the work ethic won't be a problem, but the economic conditions more dire, resulting in a greater drain on the South Korean economy.
Essentially, it's instant welfare demand for half the reunified country.

I served along the Czech-German border before the fall of the Soviet Union. I didn't see it at the time, but I was watching the Eastern block fall apart. I also served 2 tours in the DMZ. North Korea is an empty shell. Keep up the sanctions and North Korea will fall on it's own.

War is serious business, and almost always harder than it looks at the beginning. Before anyone advocates going to war in Korea, we should ask ourselves whether North Korea is a real threat to the US' survival (vital national interest). If the answer is yes, then we absolutely should kick their@ss. If not, then let's not get our sons and daughters killed just to get Kim Jung Un and his ilk out of the way. Barring a clear and present danger of the NKPA dropping nukes on us, I say the answer is no. But maybe giving them Rodman is a good compromise.

Your third sentence fails to explain that your theory won't be done while this or any similar admin is in office and if we are fortunate not to have a similar admin come in, then things would tend to change prior to what you propose....back to your third sentence...what happens when China steps in? China doesn't like N. Whoa there pardner. You have several generations worth of brainwashed and most illiterate peasants living under conditions which are brutal.
There is a giant third world problem here. Integrating these people into the rest of the world will be almost impossible... for at least 20 years. These are people who have been taught to worship each current incarnation of "Dear Leader" as a God. In other socialist shitholes those things were somewhat true yet the population ps while heavily controlled were not ABSOLUTELY cut off from the outside world. The vast majority of these uneducated masses.... who are not yearning to be free... have had absolutely no messages related to them by anything but the State for their entire lives.
North Korea is probably the most long term ABSOLUTE dictatorship in any stretch of history.
There are NO citizens there who can remember anything but the absolute rule of the state.
I have serious doubts about the ability for this to be pulled off in a fashion which anyone can even grasp at this point. The world has never dealt with such a thing.
Even the survivors of the Nazi extermination and slave camps had memories of a former life.
There have been science fiction stories which have dealt with the subject of people being released from absolute control. It will take generations to erase it.
