“In accordance with the judge’s ruling, the city will release the video by Nov. 25, which we hope will provide prosecutors time to expeditiously bring their investigation to a conclusion so Chicago can begin to heal,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said last week, according to the newspaper.

People who have seen the video told The Associated Press that it shows McDonald armed with a small knife and walking away from officers. Van Dyke opens fire from about 15 feet and keeps shooting after the teen falls to the ground [16 rounds total]. Police say McDonald, who was found with PCP in his system at the time of his death, was behaving erratically and was refusing to listen to police commands to drop the knife, the Chicago Tribune reports.
An autopsy says McDonald was shot at least twice in the back. Dan Herbert, a lawyer for Officer Van Dyke, said the 14-year police veteran believed the shooting was justified because he feared for his safety, the New York Times reported.

Chicago has more than enough problems to deal with than to release a video the day before Thanksgiving which is likely to incite vengeance when most people would prefer to offer thanks CPO Andy Carrillo, MS

There is never a "Good Time" to release such information. Just like the Guns Rights advocates always say right after a Shooting "It is never the right time to discuss this while we are in Mourning" Hoping that we will forget about it. It just happens that it took a Freedom of Information Suit to get this released and it came to Fruition Now. I'm sure it is not going to -paint a Pretty Picture of this Officer and being that Some video from a nearby restaurant has been reported to have been destroyed by the Cops doesn't help but like they used to say "The Truth will set you Free".

The timing of the release was politically motivated. The release was delayed because of fear it would impact local elections (put incumbents at risk). Doing so just before a major national holiday and while everybody is already at heightened security awareness and risk due to ISIS threats is simply idiotic.
