Would you object to having a Veterans Cemetery in your community?

It seems to some people in Irvine California that a Veterans Cemetery is not desirable. They have even planned a townhall meeting to discuss fighting the one which has been approved for the Orange County Great Park.

By way of background, the OC Great Park is being developed on land occupied by the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station until recently. The land was ceded to the city for public use and some veterans, families, and friends fought for and obtained enabling legislation for a portion to be developed as a veterans cemetery.

Sadly, some people fear that dead soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen will pollute the ground with their embalming fluids. (BTW, I'm not sure if all of the pollution left by the aircraft maintenance work was ever fully expunged)

Also, some people fear that a cemetery will warp the young, impressionable minds of their children.

And, God forbid, a bunch of stiffs won't do much for property values even if they're dressed in honor and uniforms.

You should drop by their meeting if you live in the area. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.

Two very ancient Cemeteries in my neighborhood and they are getting crowded out. By some miracle part of one was saved and now is in the middle of a parking lot for a shopping mall which is pretty cool.

No, I think our community would be PROUD to have it.

You see I live in small town North Carolina, where veterans still get a discount, we still stand up for the National Anthem, we say the Pledge of Allegiance at local events and still have a community Christmas Service at a CHURCH and Easter Celebration too.
California may not want to be part of The United States of America and that is truly sad, but here in Iredell County North Carolina, we love America and are not ashamed of Her.

So to everyone in California, stand up for what you believe! Stand FOR America or stand with Governor Moon Beam and wait for the age of Aquarius to come back around. Either way, take a stand, because when Moon Beam and the Fruit Loops see that there are more normal people than not, they will go off in a corner chant Kum Bhai Yah and eat a bowl of Granola and Nuts.

We have a National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan (See pictures) - there are Germans from WWII buried there who were POW's kept at Camp Custer in WWII. Plus all of the U.S. service men and women from the local areas - my parents are buried there. National cemeteries seem to be kept better than a majority of civilian ones.

I am appalled that my Irvine neighbors feel like this toward a cemetery honoring the men and women who were willing to put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms we have in America that have allowed these residence to purchase their nice homes, send their children to Irvine's outstanding schools, and live in one of the safest cities in California. What happened to honoring the service people who served right here at El Toro Marine Base? This is absolutely UNAMERICAN. My father served 30 years in the Navy, my husband served 28 years in the Navy, and my son has been a Navy pilot for 10 years. My husband is now sick with cancer and has said that he hopes the cemetery will be done by the time he dies. Only in America will you fine such self-serving citizens. What has happened to us? I think I will attend the meeting.
