PO3 Michael Kilbride519868

On Facebook, my team and I have noticed a strange trend. Despite a potential reach of over 200,000 people, only roughly 180 people have voted.

Backstory: a little while back I entered a contest through USAA. Something mostly irrelevant, they call it the Your Future You contest. There were 6 categories, and you could enter one photograph per category. So I did. Two weeks ago, I received an email and a phone call that I’d been selected as one of 6 finalists in the $5,000 prize and the contest begins sometime between 3/2/15 and 3/9/15. It just so happens, $5,000 is exactly what I need to finish my flight training and get into the field I’ve spent my entire life trying to get into.

Flash forward: The contest opens up and I blast it out to my Facebook, tap good friends to share it, tag those that’ve helped me consistently been good friends and yet I found out I was not even breaking 10 votes an hour. Eventually I got with the rest of my team from Military Media and we all tried tapping groups we knew that supported veterans and guess what happened? Nothing. There was nothing new or impressive in the voting trends. So I’ve slowly been watching the person in front of me creep further and further away the harder and harder I try to catch up.

Oh well, it’s only $5,000 right? What’s it to me to spend another 5 years struggling to accomplish what I could’ve finished this summer if I win?

If any of you would like to assist me, please follow the link and vote for the guy in the back of the airplane with a headset and a huge smile on his face. Everyone who knows me knows that’s the one place you’ll truly find me smiling!

Here’s the link to vote:
http://usaa.offerpop.com/campaign/712431/entry/5234196?fb_ref=Default

I’ve actually managed to catch up to the person in the lead but here’s the fascinating part: I’ve had several people in very high places with lots of people that listen to them share this on their Twitter and Facebook and no noticeable change. What is it about taking 10 seconds to click two buttons that has people so unresponsive?

If I were to post an article that says “What’s your favorite color of the moon?” I’d likely get 600 responses. Ask for real, meaningful help, and what do I get? A trickle instead of the same waterfall.Response by PO3 Michael Kilbride made Mar 9 at 2015 1:40 PM2015-03-09T13:40:04-04:002015-03-09T13:40:04-04:002015-03-08T22:59:59-04:00
