Would you call the police to search for guns in your house?

A police chief in Wisconsin is asking residents to volunteer to searches of their houses for guns as "gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus". What are your thoughts?

No, sir. My thoughts are that's nuts, but I suppose there are some folks - like, maybe, the elderly - who may not know if they have guns in the house. I'm generally pro-police, but doing something like that opens a person up to them finding anything, not just guns -- probably a bad idea.

Sounds like some angry wives or ex-girlfriends might pull this on their husbands/boyfriends. Can I call this on neighbors if their kids are suspected of being in gangs?

While I don't know Wisconsin law regarding this type of "inspection", I would say anyone who "volunteers" for this sort of "inspection" might be of 3 types; (1)a parent who fears their child living in their home might be bringing in weapons (2) an individual who owns the home and is in a relationship that is borderline abusive and fears the unmarried partner/live-in may have hidden weapons in the home (3) elderly grandparents who have grandchildren living with them who may fear the grandchildren are being used by gangs.

There are sheep, wolves and guard dogs - the sheep fear everyone.

I politely invite any peace officers interested in searching my person, house, papers effects or any of my property to present me with a warrant stating the probable cause to believe a crime has been committed and "particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

I am a law enforcement officer and my first thought on this was...NOPE! Unknown guns in your home? That is rediculous. I believe in the 2nd amendment and would not infringe on that amendment. This could also open up to charges for other items found in plain view during the search (I say search, because that is what it is, inspection or not).

I'd be careful. I'm watching COPS on tv and drugs and guns tend to appear out of no where and make their way into people's underwear....Lord knows what might materialize in your home unknown, and without your knowledge. I vote nay.

That police chief shames this Cheesehead. I have respect for and support the law and the rank-and-file officers but it seems like they have to submit to lobotomy in order to get to the higher ranks like chief.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke escaped the stupidity. He's one officer I definitely support. And he won't ask me to come into my house to "look for unknown guns."

This begs the question, what kind of person is so totally unaware of their surroundings that they might have a firearm in their home without their knowledge? I realize a child may bring one in from the street without telling the parents. I randomly searched my children's belongings for just such things as well as other contraband, cigarettes, drugs, porn, etc. One of these searches I found a butterfly knife and another one cigarettes. Fortunately I never found any drugs or firearms. I assume he kept his pot at his friends house.

Sorry call me crazy but I don't step out of my house even if the police even politely ask me to step out into the porch, nor do I invite them in or let them in if they ask.

If I call them for a specific reason, burglary, property vandalized, then that's the only time they would ever come in unless it's an emergency situation.

Not no, but $%*# no! And anyone who would is a idiot. It is never a good idea to invite the police onto your property because once there, if they find anything illegal, they will not cut you any slack. And in some states, they can confiscate your home if they find certain illegal items. Now, you might think that you have nothing to hide. But what about your wife or your kids? Are you sure they haven't hid anything illegal around the house? It is just a really dumb thing to do to invite the police into your home, especially to do a search.

I would like them to come by my house to search for "unknown guns". I am pretty sure I know where mine are at. Not sure if I have any more in the house, but I always am looking for more guns. If the could find a HK P-9 in the house I would be very grateful. I have been looking for a cheap one for a couple years.

Not only no but hell no !!!! I was accused just this last Jan of wielding a weapon at two thieves who were trying to steal a car in my driveway. I had no weapon on me and while I was dialing 911 they too were dialing while running down the street. I became the entire focus of the call and the thieves walked away unscathed, I went round and round with the police about where my weapon was and I was wanting to know what they intended to to with the thieves. They wanted to search my home and I told them no that my weapon was nicely secured elsewhere and it was not against the law to own or carry one in Utah. At one point one of the officers became exasperated with me and drew his 12 cell mag light and came at me, but I stood my ground and wound up calling the sucker a smartass. Thats all the further it went.

NOPE NOPE..wait let me think about it....NOPE! I have been in LE for 20 plus years......I have been known to give boarder check points not at the boarders fits so why on GOD's green earth would I volunteer to be searched that's as bad as NYC stop and frisk policy which is also a violation of the 4th Amendment. I would rather ask for that chief's resignation.

My mother in law has a bunch of illegal guns and tons of ammo, and she's a Mexican national! Her name is Anna and her address is 1234 Jones St, Bronx NY. She gets home at 6 pm Monday through Friday and she drives a gold 1998 Chevy Impala 4 door. She's about 70 years old, 200 lbs, gray hair, glasses, heavy spanish accent. Her bedroom is the first room on the right down the hall as you go in her house. There are no dangerous animals on the property.

WHAAAT??? Volunteer to have HIS cops search YOUR house? In most cases other than being a convicted felon you don't even need a permit for a firearm in YOUR house. I'm ALL for Law enforcement and THEN SOME but THIS seems like an real stretch from HYSTERIA even though it's "VOLUNTARY" Don't do it.
