The first thing is download the application and read through it with your FLL. Highlight all the required documents that you need and grab those. Once you have those and fill out the application see if your command will give you a letter of recommendation. The higher the officer the better. In addition congressional nominations will greatly assist.

http://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/apply_nominations.aspx for more information

Good luck.

Admissions - Apply_Nominations

After determining that you meet the basic requirements to become a cadet, you should begin seeking nominations. Be sure to highlight your community involvement and service. Don't be afraid to go far back in your history to talk up your involvement as much as possible. Youth groups like Boy Scouts, 4-H, and FFA are even good to include. Include any athletic achievements and activities. If you don't have much on the athletic side, consider running in some 5ks or other activities for which you can record tangible achievement. Good APFT performances are applicable. Also, focus on getting impressive and diverse letters of recommendation. Maybe get one from a high ranking officer in your command, one from a teacher maybe, and one from a well respected community leader. I can't remember how many letters are required. I think it's three.

Start practicing the physical aptitude test if you haven't already. It consists of pull ups, a one handed basketball throw for distance from the kneeling position, a standing long jump, and a shuttle run (300m if I recall correctly).

Good luck. Prior service cadets are an invaluable resource to their class and classmates. If you get in, your going to have a leg up on your classmates in military skills. Be sure you help them along through Cadet Basic Training and Plebe year. They're going to look up to you from the start. I was a former enlisted Marine that went to the Naval Academy. I realize that you are applying to WP, but I think that requirements are fairly similar. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
