Would an 18 y.o. be limited in job choices with an ASVAB score of 70?

My son will be turning 18 in October but took the ASVAB last year in high school. He scored a 70 but I believe he could do much better if a higher score would matter. He is interested in doing coding(?) work.

Your age doesn't determine your qualifications. The score does. Talk to your recruiter to see what you qualify for.

What score are you referring to on the ASVAB? If that is his GT Score, I highly recommend that he take one of the study courses and retest. If the 70 is his AFQT score, that puts him firmly in Tier II, which will certainly get a recruiter looking at him. The test has all kinds of line scores that have different weight for different Military Occupational Specialties. I would have him talk to a recruiter and see what's available.

ASVAB score isn't relevant as long as they score above a certain minimum. What matters are the line scores that come out of it.
ASVAB score isn't a score, it's a percentile rank. It reams he scored better than 70% of others, but it doesn't say what he actually scored.
As for coding, that's not a job we have, but we do have some entry level cyber jobs he may be qualified for

Why ask us when your son can visit a recruiter? I'd say get the information direct from the source instead of Rallypoint. Recruiters don't bite!

Age doesn’t matter for the asvab. You can take it as many times as you want. But, the higher the score the more jobs will be available to him. But, keep in mind recruiters will accept the most recent score. If he scores lower in the next asvab it could affect his current choices. Good luck.

If he has a 70 QT SASVAB, he's an Alpha and I'm surprised he hasn't been contacted yet. As others have said, the line scores will determine what jobs he qualifies for. The army has plenty of entry-level IT and cyber jobs that might interest him with a ton of opportunity for advancement. I'd have him make an appt with a local recruiter- if they can't help let me know.

Thank you everyone for the insight. My son won't turn 18 until October of this year so my thread title is misleading. Maybe because he is 17 the recruiter hasn't contacted him yet.

A 70 is already a great ASVAB score, but improving it could open even more opportunities, especially for competitive coding or technical jobs. If he’s confident he can score higher, retaking the ASVAB could be worth it to boost his line scores:
