I have been spotted by out of a crowed before as being military given my haircut and clean shaven. Given the new regulations of always being clean shaven when not on leave this will really ensure that everyone knows which males are military.

Given the recent events and threats and many commands stating do not wear uniforms when off duty or off post should the military abandon the typical traditional military male haircuts?

In my opinion a military member will always stand out regardless of haircut. You cannot change or remove the mannerisms that military members or retirees have. It is instilled in your being. It may be foolish but I will not be intimidated. I will still wear hats, tee shirts and keep my few decals on my truck. I am proud of my service and will not run or hide it.

Retired 27 years ago. USAF retired decal on back window of my truck, MSgt stripes on windshield. If you spent much time in the military the way you walk, stand, scan, talk all give you away. Besides if they want to come after some one better me than someone else.

I did a STANAFOR, a MED, a WESTPAC (including during the tanker war), and in 6 years stopped in 22 countries (and over 30 ports), to this day I still wear it short (not that there is much to cut any more).

SN Jay Perry - It was routine during the NATO cruise to get the 'briefing' before leaving the ship for liberty, Smart people learned to listen to it. Some ports we were REQUIRED to wear dress blues the first night in port. You learned from your shipmates to avoid problems and to very quickly skin off the top, leaving you in a plain white T-shirt which could save your butt!

I disagree. While stationed overseas, protection of military members should be at the forefront. It is easy to pick out the military Americans in a crowd while you are out with your friends enjoying the local town's small festivals while in Germany. As such, we are easy targets for anyone wishing to do harm.

There is nothing in the regs that makes the haircut make males standout. Many businessmen keep hair off their ears and collars, nothing requires a high and tight.

Exactly this. Though I know the Cat with all the stripes and chest candy might take exception, if you get a regulation haircut, you will LOOK no more or less like a well groomed gentleman.

Nope. Short haircuts are in style in the civilian population as well, so there's probably no need. Taking the military-themed stickers off the cars and avoiding wearing uniforms to public events would do much more to protect the force.

Also, leave those military clothes, hats, insignia, etc., at home when you go out to a public event.

CW5 (Join to see) They still could identify you by the stickers on your windshield that are required to remain on your vehicle to enter any military installation.

PO3 Shaun Taylor - Stickers are no longer used to enter a Military Installation, there are NO wave through's anymore for stickers, everyone must stop and at least one person must show a valid Military ID card to enter which is also scanned and recorded via computer on entry to many bases This shows not only who entered but when. The gate guards have hand held devices that accomplish that task.
