Most Chinese probably don't even know there are protests, or that there were in Tianamen Square for that matter.
Thirty years ago, Tianamen Square was directly adjacent to the Chinese seat of power and a clear and present danger to the regime, hence the heavy response. At the time, I was surprised that it was allowed to play out as long as it was. The presence of Western media probably had something to do with that.
I think they let the Hong Kong protests fizzle out, then round up the trouble makers to disappear. I thought after Tiananmen Square, they'd rush to crush dissent. Maybe they're worried about ruining the Golden Goose that is Hong Kong?? I'm sorry, but the Brits made a mistake giving up control of this colony. If they didn't want to run it, the US should have stepped in and assumed control IMO.

China needs to be knocked down a few pegs & this is happening- their economy is contracting, unlike what their "official numbers" suggest.
