Will my IRR get denied if I get a U?

I have a contract of 6/2 and completed my 6 years. I submitted my IRR packet a week ago with my unit commander's approval. My U/A said I cannot miss any drills until I get my orders saying I am in the IRR or else it will get denied. How true is that? I am currently in med school and not finding it feasible to make time for the military at this moment. I would like to know if getting one or two U's will make it impossible for me to go IRR. Also, how long does it take to get orders saying you're in the IRR?

Any input would be great. Thanks.

To clarify = U is unauthorized absence and IRR is individual ready reserve (not having to drill)

Some commands have internal policies about releasing Soldiers to the IRR if they are not in good standing with the unit (medical readiness, administrative forms, flags).
I recommend speaking with your command team and working out an agreement - if they've want you to continue to drill maybe you can RST.
The packet and orders can take 2-6 months pending signatures. Every command has different priorities of administratively paperwork.

There’s many ways to get around it. I would recommend speaking to your leadership and get excuses absences or reschedule training (RST). But to answer your question directly, no. You have completed your obligatory service. The RPAC or unit S1 as well as retention should have identified you a separating months ago and initiated your IRR packet in a timely manner. It’s unfortunate you technically have to drill since you don’t have orders but again, work it out with your leadership.

This is from T-1-A-1 Request for Reassignment to the Individual Ready Reserve (Voluntary)
For Soldiers requesting reassignment to IRR based on meeting 6x2 obligation, please see the following:
Enlisted Soldiers may REQUEST reassignment to the IRR prior to their TPU obligation date; however, the EFFECTIVE DATE of the order may not be on or before the TPU obligation date (For example, on a 6x2 contract, the effective date will be NET 6yrs + 1 day). This action WILL NOT go through the chain of command. Units will forward the packet through HRPAS directly to the servicing RPSC for issuance of orders.

That makes me think that your unit is not involved in the approval or denial of your request to go into the IRR. However, I think if you miss more than 4 days, then you will be flagged UNSAT (Unsatisfactory Participation) which would affect your IRR procedure.

For completion of Enlisted SELRES 6x2 contracts, the unit should not be holding you back. Units can get the orders on the same day. Units should review any flags prior to Soldiers transferring to the IRR so erroneous flags are removed. The following is posted on the USAR Personnel Actions Guide (PAG):

"ATTN: Enlisted Soldiers requesting reassignment to the IRR based on meeting 6x2 obligation or Immediate Reenlistment will follow the processes outlined on the checklist found in Note 1 and Note 2 of the checklist. These requests WILL NOT go through the chain of command. Units will forward packets through ePAT directly to the servicing RD. All other packets will process IAW the workflow below. All Officer requests for reassignment to the IRR will go through the chain of command to the GFC for review."

For future reference, Voluntary reassignment packets gets routed directly to the Readiness Divisions.

The commander may have to be involved in the creation of the packet as far as signatures...BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, the ARA at the unit has signature authority to sign in place of the commander for routine business (IRR Transfer is routine)...treat them well.

It will not affect your packet if you get U’s after it is submitted. Unless, your commander or ARA are spiteful and cancel the routing of the packet or just don’t submit the packet...but I feel like that is an ethical violation of some sort.

Personally, it takes me about a week turnaround to get orders cut from the RD with IRR transfer orders.
