Will I be able to finish my 20 years if I am notified of QMP results one month before I hit 18 years in service?

Just received a qmp notice saying I'm just being reviewed for QMP if I'm getting pushed out I won't receive an answer until Sep 2019, but Oct 31 2019 I'll be at 18yrs will I be able to do my 20??

SSG Private RallyPoint Member MILPER Message 18-249 has the answer to all the what ifs. Reading quickly, it looks like you'll need to request exception to policy so that you'll be able to take advantage of the protection offered by federal statute at 18 years AFS. Pages 8-10 discuss post board options. Pre board options are closer to the beginning.

You'll get an answer in September, with an ETS date of the 1st day of the 7th month after the board makes its decision. That will put you at 18 years. You are eligible to request to be transferred to a Reserve status to attain a reserve retirement at 20 years.

You'll want to stay active and do the continuation thing as the good LCOL indicated. Going reserve and doing two gets you money, but doesn't start until age 60. You'll have to do the math, but getting less sooner and investing the right amount will turn out better in the long run. However, if you invest nothing, then age 60 on is much leaner.

Unfortunately if you get QMP, in order to stay active and retire, you’ll have to have 18 1/2yrs at the time of notification in order to reach 20 on active duty. As the others have suggested, there are other alternatives that you have so you can still reach your 20 years. Good Luck to you.
