Why would a US service member try to join ISIS?

A member of Army National Guard and his cousin have been arrested in Illinois for allegedly conspiring to provide material support ISIS.

My only thought is that they had Jihadist leanings before joining, joined the military to learn military skills, then sought a Jihadist organization.

Or perhaps reverse Stockholm Syndrome in a soldier who did a DetOps mission?
