Why is it we love humor but hate emotions or emotional responses in general?

PFC Donnie Harold Harris humor doesn’t involve emotions. It’s easy to fake a laugh or jovial response. I found in the military that I needed to leave my emotions out of my decisions. I had to discharge some of my brightest workers who could not follow the rules. They had families so their decisions affected them as well. If I made my decision to take care of the family and allow the person who broke the law to stay, I would have lost my job and credibility. We have to make incredibly hard choices.

For example if you are getting ready to deploy and Someone decides to go AWOL it affects the mission and can get people killed. I could write a lengthy response but I believe this answers your question from my perspective.

All good humor is based on pain and it helps us mitigate the pain. Most other emotions are likewise based on pain but don't have the same therapeutic benefits of humor
