Why is Hitler the most hated when Mao and Stalin killed a lot more people?

You can find documentary after documentary on Hitler and the Nazis but very few are made about Stalin or Mao both of who made Hitler look like a kitten. Today in china Mao is veiwed upon favorably even after he killed between 50 to 70 million of his own people. In college universities today Hitler is the all time bad guy… but not so much Stalin or Mao… my suggestion is that our current liberal philosophy is a direct descendant of the same marxist philosophy of Stalin and Mao and they feel that those roughly 100 million people that died at the hands of these communist deserved it.... Similar to their feelings about conservatives today. Or is it because the communists killed entire lineages leaving no families members to carry on the rage.

I think what it stems to is we western countries who pretty much write and control history were of course at war with Germany where as we weren't with Russia or China at the times those rulers were doing what they did. That said we are going to be more focused on the ones we directly opposed and fought since they are our bad guys. It's all in what history we teach and right now (or at least when I was in school) we spent far more time focused on the World War where we were against the great evil known as Nazi Germany.

Hitler is probably the most hated man in history due to the fact that his ultimate goal was to exterminate an entire race of people in a very short amount of time. While there were certainly wars before WW 2 that focused on making war against any one group, Hitler took the idea of totally eliminating all "inferior" races to heights that had never been seen before. Maybe the scariest part is, that if things had gone a different way, if the Allied Forces had attacked a few weeks later, if the Russian army was not able to march in to Berlin with minimal resistance, Hitler may just might have succeeded in killing millions more.

History is Unique and Victors do get to write their own history but you bring up some very valid points. They were the Victors in WWII and Hitler was the Loser. Also the Fact that Stalin and Mao were both allies of ours during the War kinda prevented a true and in-depth look a their methodologies. Also Mao didn't do most of his "Political" programs until after the War and in Isolation. Same with Stalin as far as his crimes against were conducted in Isolation which really denied and In-Depth Analysis.

Ones of the reasons Hitler is so popular among documentarians is that there is a LOT of actual film footage taken by the Nazis, add to that the fact that they documented everything, even cataloguing those they slaughtered. Finally we have the US and its military who came in to clean up there mess, and further document the atrocities, and it becomes clear why the Nazis are the "chosen" ones to illustrate. Neither Stalin, nor Mao, nor Pol Pot created such extensive documentation.

We had an active hand in helping the Russians take down Hitler. The bigger a bad guy he is, the bigger our street cred for helping topple him (or as our history books like to put it, taking him down single handedly). It's just selective history. Those who help perpetuate the mythos of the all powerful 'Mericuh! receive publicity, those who don't receive a byline somewhere in the middle of the book.

I think the continued Angst about Hitler is because of his attempt to "extinguish" one particular race or group of people... the Jews, not to mention the rather heinous methods he used, gassing and burning after stealing any jewelry or belongings they had or gold in their teeth and other really sick weirdness like that, as well as making lamp shades, wallets and belts of their skin and now Muslim Extremists are vowing to pick up where Hitler left off, using equally heinous methods to kill their victims ... the beheading, drowning, burning people alive, etc.

Stalin was killing his fellow Russians and others that didn't agree with his policies and Mao did the same thing in China, they each selected particular segments in their societies that disagreed with their philosophies and did away with them. As did the Comair Rouge in Laos and other Mad men down through history...

As for why the rest of the world isn't mad to the same degree as with Hitler... that's a great question... you've got me hangin' Son? If you ever figure it out let us know!

And The Liberals or Leftists having the same wish to do the same kind of thing with "Conservatives" is precisely why we will never willingly give up our Guns...

Because during the early stages of the rise of the Third Reich in Germany, that's exactly what Hitler did... he told the populace (People) they didn't need guns, because "the Government would protect them"... so the people of Germany eventually allowed the Nazi's to confiscate all privately owned firearms...

After that neither the Jews, nor non-Nazi Germans, nor Black people, nor any one else that didn't fit into the cast of the "Arian" definition of the Blond haired, blue eyed, white skinned, atheistic "Ideal" had the means by which to resist... and they were herded into cattle cars, taken to work camps and either worked to death or in many cases used for medical experimentation or other kinds of sick and grisly experimentation, such as experimentation weapons and ammunition testing or otherwise systematically exterminated in gas chambers made to look like showers...

And then the victims bodies burned were in incinerators like cord wood. The ashes of at first thousands and eventually millions were cleared from the ovens and used to make cement to build more ovens or make gun emplacements, build buildings or for paving or even mix with the soil and used to grow food for those that continued to be rounded up and brought to the work camps.

It's some pretty sickening stuff... but don't ever let anyone convince you that it's beyond the realm of possibility for it to happen again... History has seen similar occurrences over and over and over again!

Still at the "Lock out" bit ...only allowing certain people to comment Nagel... that's really lame!

Anyway, I just wanted to suggest to the College Boy (SrA Siatkowsky) that he might want to check our Will Durant's "The Story of Civilization" series. Just be warned... beside the Series Opener called "The Lessons of History" there are 11 other Volumes, each about the size of a Standard Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary. Enjoy... they're really very through.

There are also several very good History's written by a fellow named Jared Diamond... the best of that Group is called "Collapse" which speaks to the reasons for the rise and fall of several past civilizations!

Stalin and Mao killed his own people. That makes it somehow less aggressive. I think that Hitler got that dishonor by the preservation of the concentration camps. Most other nations that have had prisoner camps in any form has eradicated those traces, like the US - I mean where can one see a full declaration of how and where we concentrated all the Japanese people following Pearl Harbor? Even the Native American reservations, has gone from a poverty stricken camp to a financial loophole for massive economic gain. Not a trace of how it started.

Although all are considered bad, Hitler targeted specific groups, Jewish, enfeebled, and non-aryan. Mao and Stalin were indiscriminate in their killing. Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS has it right though, when you can see the carnage, it brings a visual component that will invoke emotion.

No shortage of bad guys in recent history. I'm not sure it is terribly productive to crown a "worst". All of these guys were dwarfed by some of the nastiness in antiquity.

There are some powerful movies on Netflix about that very time period. Back to 1942 I believe. The Chinese were selling daughters and wives for a 1/2 cup of rice. They are all worthy of sitting at the devil's table.

Well it depends on who you ask, I am sure the Native Americans don't have high regards for the Europeans, ask the Irish the English, ask the Indians about the English, hell we didn't like the English.

Hitler, took to eliminating a religion which earned him some degree of notoriety. Stalin Mao killed opponents, potential opponents, and anyone who was stupid enough to disagree with them, wore the wrong thing, looked funny. I read or heard something once "there are a lot of War Crimes, only the Germans were stupid enough to record it."
