Why does America have an obsession with celebrity culture?

I was in a waiting room and an afternoon talk show had on a Kardashian.
In what appeared to be serious discussion...her book of selfies, Kanye West supposedly running for POTUS, an app that gives makeup tips, etc.
I sat there thinking how they really dont produce a product of value, yet it always sells - A book of selfies?? Their reality shows?
I used to rip on them, calling them idiots...but, they make a product that customers seem to love.
Thoughts...? What does this say about a segment of the American population??

There's two sides to this coin.

Remember the story of Pandora's Box. It was opened and all the evils of the world are released. But what was left was Hope. Now... "Celebrity Culture" is all about Hope. It's about showing what can be attained.

The problem is that most people don't put in the Hard Work that is required to attain it.

Say what you will about the Kardashians or Kanye West. They work. They work hard, and they work constantly.

?!? WTF Aaron, are you stupid?!? When are they working?!?

All the damn time. They have shows on the air. They are at photo shoots. They are recording albums. They are "branding." They are working. It may not be "valuable" work, but it is work none the less, and people pay for it. They are compensated commensurate with the amount of effort they put in.

Now don't get me wrong, I think their PRODUCT is mind-destroying drivel, but I cannot fault their WORK ETHIC. Just like I can't fault the work ethic of the Lance Corporal who spends 8 hours painting rocks. Poor Product, great Effort. The only difference is that the Kardashians (et al) have figured out how to monetize it.

We are obsessed with superficial glitter and fantasy as a culture. This is especially obvious during the Oscars and other awards shows, when people who are driven to work in limousines walk along a red carpet wearing outfits that cost a year's O5 pay and tell us how hard they work and how much courage they have to deal with the ordeal of being rich and famous. We obsess over awards for the best make-believe players while ignoring the actions of real heroes.

when people have no meaning in their life they look for something that will give them a little light at the long and dirty road they must travel. sad but it gives them hope

It's unfortunate and sad that so many people are so unhappy with themselves they chose a celebrity to try and emulate. It's the media creating celebrities off people that have no talent at all. A pretty face and a nice body is not what we should be teaching our girls that's all you need to be successful. How about let's preach get an education and work hard to be successful. For those that can be successful with a pretty face and a nice body and can use that more power to them. However I sure as heck won't be expecting my granddaughters to follow this lead.
