SCPO Private RallyPoint Member The second amendment is the muscle behind the brain of the first amendment. The first amendment provides the right to free speech, free assembly, free religion, free press, and to petition the government to fix their mistakes. The second amendment is the insurance policy that those rights won't be trampled by the government. It is important to defend all of our constitutional rights. If we are willing to start sacrificing our rights in the hope of safety, we risk losing those rights.

Because, removing guns does not remove human behavior. Evil people will do evil things regardless the means. History and current events in countries like GB where violent crime increased after firearms were removed from the bulk of their society proves that criminals/evil people target those they perceive to be unable to protect themselves. Governments themselves, made of human beings, are not immune from the corruption of power, the longer they hold power the more power they attempt to seize.

Putting aside the logical answers many others have already posted, I think it's important to remember that the first ten Amendments are known as the "Bill of Rights." Because these rights (and some others that are not in the Bill of Rights) are legally considered "fundamental rights" under the Constitution, that means they can't just be taken away because of trending public opinion, majority viewpoints, or judicial or legislative activism. As one poster noted, it takes an enhanced majority of Congress as well as the States to amend the Constitution but even then, according to the U.S. Supreme Court, interference with "fundamental rights" is a heightened standard that is very difficult to overcome. In short, the Second Amendment is a fundamental right and it's not going away easily or anytime soon.

The 2nd Ammendmentis there to serve as a bulwark against encroachment in every other.
Every dictatorship throughout history all have one thing in common. After taking control of a nation, they banned the private ownership of weapons of their era for self defense. In doing so, they effectively eliminated the people’s last means of defending themselves against their own government.
The founders were men who knew their history and had the foresight to apply the lessons they’d learned from history as far into the future of this nation as they possibly could.
Absolute power does indeed corrupt absolutely. Power hungry human beings in elected & unelected positions in government have the inheritable traits of never being satisfied with the power entrusted to them. They, in time, become part of an insatiable beast, addicted to power for powers sake. The founders knew this as well.
We are quite literally the only nation on God’s earth that has the right to own and bear arms codified in our founding document. It is for that reason alone that we have been able to remain a free people. That precious right we have, protected by our founding document has, in large part, protected us from would be tyrants in our own land as well as from bonified tyrants from other lands.
Those who know something of America’s history understand that enemies, past and present, who contemplated invading our shores were under no illusions that, even if they succeeded in actually setting foot on the soil of our mainland, they would face an entire nation of very well armed citizens who would stand against them. Yes, others have thought of invading the United States and, after considering what they would face if they made it this far, decided it wasn’t feasible to try.
That being the case, would be tyrants within our nation will still never cease their attempts to disarm us at any cost.
Does anyone honestly believe that Sen. Diane “Turn in your guns Mr. & Mrs. America” Feinstein actually promotes that bullshit other your best interests or the interests of America at heart? No one who is rational or sane plus believe that for a split second.
They love to spew out bs about “needing”
One weapon or another even as they are surrounded by their armed body guards to protect them with the very same weapons they bitch about the American public possessing and say we don’t “need” them. What they want us all to forget is the simple fact that “need” has not a damn thing to do with anything. We have them because it is our God given RIGHT to have them and we want to, so we do, period.
As for needing them, it is to protect ourselves from monsters and politicians who would livebjothing better than to be able to prey on us without fear of immediate and severe consequences. No tryant can ever usurp the freedom of n armed people. It’s no more complicated than that.

So that we never have to experience things like 6 million Jews killed because of a tyrant (Hitler) or 20 million people killed by an insane tyrant (Stallin). America lives and breaths propaganda from Facebook, Twitter, MSNBC, Fox News and a million other useless "news" sources. We lost 17 people in a tragic shooting and in a weeks time people are demanding to remove one of the 10 basic freedoms the founders of this nation made sure to put in place. Yet, motor vehicle accidents kill more children than all other causes of death put together. Where is that "news"? It does not fit into an agenda so it goes unheard. First goes the ability to resist then goes the ability to speak out against the government and it goes down hill from there.

Kind of hard to tell when folks are trolling, but I'll bite.

Our founding fathers thought it was important to the continued freedom of our country. Could they envision the weapons of our times? That seems to be s lot of the argument against guns. No, the didn't nor couldn't. They also didn't foresee the use of personal electronics to insult and slander each other either, but nobody seems to be advocating for the repeal of the 1st amendment.

The 2nd amendment is our protection from a tyrannical government. Yes it's an antiquated statement. Could it happen today? Not in the USA. I'm confident that we will remain free, but not from a government who demands disarming it's citizens. Many countries have done so, some cat named Hitler made a pretty good go of it.
A benefit of the 2nd is being able to protect ourselves, our families and our possessions. Seem like pretty useful side affect.

The Bill of Rights, in its entirety, exists for the sole purpose of limiting the power of a central federal government. By design, the Constitution can be changed with enough politicians working together. The Second Amendment is the teeth against an Amendment changing our government from a republic to tyranny.

Because we believe, "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

So that, should a tyrannical government form in our country and grossly overstep its constitutionally-imposed limits, and no other means of redress are available, then the American citizenry may reject that government and demand the rule of constitutional law.

The 2nd Amendment was specifically directed by the founding fathers 1. to protect the people for the government ( why we fought in the 1st place) 2. to provide extra defense in case of foreign invasions (1812). Also at that time EVRY ABLE bodied male 16-60 was required to be in the TOWN Militia, which when all mustered together became the Colony/State militia.

Report: 92 Percent of Mass Shootings Since 2009 Occurred in Gun-Free Zones
On October 9, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) released a revised report showing that 92% of mass public shootings between January 2009 and July 2014 took place in gun-free zones.
The CPRC report was released in response to an Everytown for Gun Safety study claiming only 14% of mass public shootings took place in gun-free zones. Everytown actually claimed 86% of such incidents occurred in places where guns were allowed.

CPRC showed that the 86% claim rests on Everytown’s “inclusion of attacks in private homes” and “numerous errors in identifying whether citizens can defend themselves.” For example, Everytown “[ignores] rules that prevent general citizens from carrying guns [for self-defense]” in certain cities, and they fail to recognize that “allowing police to carry guns is not the same thing as letting civilians defend themselves.”

So Everytown might count an attack in a public area in Los Angeles as a mass shooting where guns are allowed because certain guns are allowed in the city with a permit. However, they miss the fact that L.A. County issues a minuscule number of concealed carry permits, and many of the ones that are issued are granted only “to wealthy [political] donors.”

Using the same numerical standard that Everytown used–four or more people killed–but taking all rules and regulations against firearm possession into account, CPRC showed that only 8% of mass public shootings occurred in places where citizens could have guns for self defense
