Why do those who Steal Valor claim to be Special Forces so often?

I have found yet another fake here. Danny Erickson. I think I am getting good at this. But when you see a person claiming to be an SF officer you would expect them to provide a better story than this. This fake has been in since Somalia and is still a CPT. But don’t worry. He has also been in Hollywood working with the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. But he still had time to hit just about every conflict in the past few decades. He should have at least one star on his CIB if not 2 stars. I love how he went to Alpha base at Benning. I guess I wasn't cool enough to be there. And to do all of this as a CPT, pretty impressive.

This comes from his own Bio. This bio was supposedly developed from an interview in 1995. Please excuse the grammer. This reporter couldn’t seem to find a single period in this essay on how awesome Danny was.
1. His Mother had once shot for them ,the quickly Sponsored Denny and Archery Became just as if not more Important than Martial Arts and Gymnastics which was Great because at 9 years old He had Reached 150lbs and 5'4" Which for a 9 year old was pretty large
2. By Sophmore year Denny Was Already being bussed to William Rainey Harper College to start Gen Ed and Law Enforcement Classes , at 17 he Opted to Enlist On the Concurrent Enrollment Option Basic and AIT while finishing his Degree in Business Admin With Minor in Law Enforcement Studies ,He Graduated AIT 2nd Lt. And Was Sent to Alpha Camp outside Ft.Benning Ga, and then Fort Cambell Ky, 101st ABN Air Assault ,75th Ranger Training Corps.
3. The Then Very Green 2nd Lt. Was Deployed to Kuwait and then to Panama then Back to Saudi ,Kuwait and Afghanistan . Upon Visiting Home He was Offered Work as a Martial Arts Stunts Trainer for MMPR by an acquaintance starring in the show , for the next few years arranging his leave around the filming schedules .
4. After reporting back to the Army during a routine Halo with Canine Insertion Jump , Denny Sustained a Career ending Injury , Broken Neck C5-7 and T6-10 .
5. Den Erickson was a Martial Arts And Tactical Instructor For DOD/DOJ in the Midwest ,Recently Specializing In Canine Deployment . Teaches Krav Maga , Holds an 8th Dan Shotokan Karate ( Rank Of Kyoshi) Practices Kyujutsu /Kyudo (Japanese Archery) Fought MMA in His Youth To Keep His Edge ,was often Disqualified for Being too Aggressive, the Fights Had with Oleg Taktarov and Dan Severn Among his Best were Draws with MMA in its infancy was not legal in most states at the time .

Most likely because they have so little knowledge of the military they fall back to titles they see in movies and quick internet searches. Plus given secrecy involved with SOF in general it's harder for others to verify claims. As several have pointed out, if you are going to steal valor, why claim to have been in a position no one knows about.

It's part of the allure of being a certified badass. If I said I'm a Navy Seal, people would be like "wow that's awesome. How many talibans did you kill". Now if I said I was a Maint Admin, people would say "what is that" or "are you really a Marine". Granted, I know my job is important. I understand the ins and outs of it and know my contribution to the mission at hand. Some people just don't appreciate the bigger picture. It's all about body counts and chugging beers. It's not even just civilians, there are plenty of service members who try and inflate their own sense of worth by making themselves out to be a bigger badass.

I think the allure for claiming to be any type of Special Forces, at least from the AFSOC units I've worked with, is that you don't have to give specifics to what you did, simply because of the nature of "Special" Forces, inherently. It alleviates most of the problems with coming up with convincing lies, since no one can corroborate what you say if they didn't have "clearance" to know about your op in the first place. It automatically places them at an advantage to shirk small details that can get fudged in "cover stories", especially when it's something that any current or former AD can detect as being wrong right off the bat, like uniform violations, SOPs, base names, etc.

CPT Russell Pitre If you read his bio carefully, it says , "75th Ranger Training Corps" which doesn't mean he completed Ranger course. To me this means he attended but never completed. Since he's out he must have a DD-214, so it's just a simple matter of requesting it, which I will do. Will post when it arrives. I'm continuously amazed by the number of people who claim to be former SF. They always get caught for a number of reasons. First, it's impossible to talk the talk, when you have not walk the walk. They tend to talk in vague references about conflicts, but can't seem to remember the number of the team they were on, or the names of team members, or exact dates of operations. Secondly, these assholes tell tall tales that make Bob Howard look like a slacker - i.e., I got 8 purple hearts, 6 bronze stars, 3 silver star and was nominated for the MOH twice - but, my records are classified, so no one knows about me. Other times they talk about being deployed as a one-man operation for long periods of time - I had this one related to me just last week yet again. It's impossible to spend time in SF, and not have people remember you. You make lots of friends in the Q-Course, and the men on sister-teams know who you are - so, the idea that SOF is secretive does not hold up as a reason that nobody knows who you are. These guys will also claim POW status - stating that my whole team died but me, and I escaped 30 days later etc. They also can't seem to get their uniforms right. The first guy I remember looking into got busted because a local newspaper publish a war-hero article with a photo about him. The guy had a beret on with the 5th Group flash where the flash was positioned over his left ear, not his left eye. He had a Pee Wee Herman look about him - the photo busted him. In a day where a FOIA can be pulled on any individual it astounds me that these people still think they can get away with this kind of behavior, but they come out of the woodwork with alarming regularity. Why do they do it? Low self esteem is one factor I expect, and I think that many think that claiming a military background helps flush out a lackluster resume. The SF community is currently outing a gent who was able to pull off his story for more than a decade - claimed SF LTC - FOIA shows he was a PFC clerk when he ETS'd.

It is not hard to spot this, as most SF friends I have (I was just an 11b), but my first platoon sergeant was SF, and became a SGM, SF. Most don't tend to brag, they are that self assured. I ran into one in Thailand, great man...was an SF medic. He later became a PA, and we both ended up at Fort Ord, 14 years later. I went in to see "the doc" for what we called "Jungle Rot" (I was a battalion S-1). The doc looked at me and it was my friend from Thailand. You would never know this PA had such a background... He was self assured. Was damn good to sit and talk to him almost daily. I have a nephew, who is a Navy diver, with those gold jump wings. He has been attached to SEAL teams for over 10 years (SEAL delivery teams) who are carried in specially re-designed nuclear subs, that can launch their delivery vehicle. Now, he is not a SEAL, but has been through a lot of the same training (has. Enlisted helicopter pilot wings...and yes, the Navy did have this year's ago, in addition to many other specialties, like cross rated as a corpsman). He is a little guy, a Navy Chief, now teaches at the BUDs training school at Coronado. (His list of medals are quite impressive). Like I said he is a little guy, with a constant smile and is the first man to help you move or take you to the biggest dive in Honolulu, only because the food there is fantastic. To sum this up, they are on a nuc sub for up to months, waiting to be inserted somewhere. At about 5ft 7 or 8, he comes off the sub with about 17 or 18 inch arms and in the 1 to 2% body fat range... Work out and eat well is pretty much what they do on the big boat, in addition to constant scenario briefs. Like I said, he has a constant smile, would run out in traffic to get a dog or cat who could get hit. He was in a 7-11 a few years ago, getting a slurpee, when two (now called thugs), pants pulled down, wearing hoodies. The first one...well over 6 ft, intentionally bumped the Chief, and as the second thug was approaching (putting my nephew between them). Well, the little Chief had both of them on the floor and bleeding (missing teeth, broken noses and possibly other injuries), in what was only a couple of seconds. Still smiling, he got his slurpee, the store owner said no charge, and he walked out as if nothing had happened. Watch out for those who are self assured, don't wear every award made, and are truly very self assured. He has taken me to one of his bases (a base within a base) and I had the honor of meeting most from that team...where rank had very little meaning, as I saw an E-8 and the team CO both in an in-ground pool...a really big pool, quite well covered, practicing on one of their delivery vehicles...the Senior even threw me a line to help pull some life vests through the mini-sub, not knowing or caring I was no longer in the military. They had a wall with pictures of those Kia, it had some names that made big page news. My nephew has been to a lot of funerals, and to be shown this wall of honor was really a treat. Sorry for being long winded...tha is what being an S-1 and going to law school does to ya... And, no. I didn't take the bar, I told the dean I wasn't a big enough ass hole to be an attorney (nor did I flunk out), I was an 11b...

I met a guy at Carolina Rebellion last year who said he was the top rated sniper in Iraq and the Army would not rotate back to the world until he threatened to quit. Why blow smoke up my a$$ when we just met? I was a helicopter mechanic in the 80's and proud of it. It takes all of us to keep the Army running.

Whats an MMPR? Anyway, I think there's a second reason why Posers go SO: They can't show you their DD-214 because its classified. Or they have papers but as a truck driver MOS but that's just a cover.
PS To our SpecOps Bros: just to verify, any operator you know have NO DD-214 ... Or a blank one because its secret? Or it doesnt list the SF MOS on it?

I was actually stationed with a guy that told me he was a MOUNTAIN expert that trained with the 10th Mountain Division. And special ops qualified. And was in the 52nd Ranger Battalion at Ft. Polk. He was an aircraft engine mechanic that had also(didn't know at the time) had removed the flag on his promotion during transition. Can you say "idiot"??
What this idiot failed to realize is I just came from Ft Drum and knew better but I let him continue AND I spent 4yrs at Ft Lewis where the 52nd is. After he finished his antic dote in front of most who knew better. I had to burst his bubble. What a glorious and wonderful time I had debunking his sorry ass in front everyone he was trying to impress. Before someone else took that from me. HA HA HA!!!

well i searched the interwebs and it would seem you are correct nothing but half wit websites that think he is real acknowledge what he is saying and then a bloated twitter account he tried saying in some interview about he is new archery show (only god knows how this guy got a show) that all his "gear" are one-off productions and cannot be bought off the shelf....and his imdb page has been edited a little but i couldnt find a credits page for him stating what he has actually been given credit for like stunts and that power rangers thing? yah im no army cat but yah this dude seems fake i dont believe he holds master level titles in three different martial arts thats for sure and there is no way he could have done those acting gigs and served active duty anything he wouldnt have earned enough leave to "schedule his leave around them" he get 2 days a month just like the rest of us

I just recently had a gal out in Texas claiming to be an officer of the American Legion out in San Antonio. For so reason she really wants my disabled adult roommate while I’m a care taker for to go out there.
So she was trying to win me over with her pristine service history.
So when I got her on the phone and she just kept talking and taking and talking!!!! I eventually got a word in and asked her what her MOS was? She stuttered all over the place then told me she wasn’t ARMY, but that she was NAVY!
So I said ok what was your service job (extremely sarcastically) and she replied with “Oh I was a PO2!”
I just shook my head and continued to ask her what pay grade she was at separation! Her reply to that was she wasn’t in very long but that she could be trusted because her commander was helping her to get my roommate over there!!
Hahahahaha yea ok crazy! I ended up having to call law enforcement out here and the two deputies that came out were prior service and so I let them know that I think this gal was trying to lure my roommate out there because she disabled!
Just thought it was funny because she was such an amazing officer that didn’t do much time and her rank was her job! Hahahaha

Should have seen when I asked to see her DD214 hahahaha

I recently was talk to a friend who said she met an SF operator and did all these crazy things that set off the bullshit meter (cant help it former MP in me). Well a little digging and guess what he had just enough truth in the story that most people wouldn’t have dug deeper. He testified before a state senate on Vet affairs and had a company that pandered to wannabes and law enforcement. Turns out he was at Bragg and was in the group, His rank checked out, and was deployed to most of the places he said he was. Here is the lies, Tier 1 operator, online presence was scrubbed, had to change his name to protect his loved ones, deployed to some crazy locations, and was wounded a few times in combat.
Most if not all of us would have been very proud of the fact of his rank and was in the unit and his history in line units. However, he was just commo and was support, had never been to Q School, and only deployed as a regular joe. He changed his name to run from a very bad business deal and soon to be ex-wife. I guess embellishment (lying) is in his DNA and can’t stop.

When I was working in psych nursing we had a patient who claimed to be an agent for the FBI. He stated his cover name was "Agent Mouse". During one treatment session one of the staff actually called the local FBI post and asked about Agent Mouse (using speaker phone as the patient was with us so all could hear). The individual stated she had been asked about Agent Mouse before and that he had never worked for/in the FBI. As we sat around and looked at the patient he simply stated: I feel sorry for her having to answer that question as she can't divulge classified information! Chalk one up for the patient!

I went to AIT at Ft. Devens, MA way back in the day. We had guys come over from the 10th SFGA to pick up the girls in our school. Back in 1979, it was very easy to spot the real green berets from the support people. The support people had a a bar with the group's color while the Q'ed guys had a full flash on their beret. We called support people "candy stripers". Their support people were the worst for saying they were the real deal when they came over to bug us in AIT. The real SF guys ended up marrying quite a few of our AIT women b/c they were just themselves, not talking crap on how special of a force they were.

You know, a valor thief would get away if he were to simply say, "I was a Ranger (or SF) but I never killed anyone or fast-roped out of a helicopter during a raid. Mostly we just drove around and nothing happened. I liked it, but my Secret clearance got revoked when my credit score sunk; so I got out."
