Why do schools no longer teach civics/citizenship in elementary and secondary education?

Does the fact that schools are no long teaching kids the responsibility of citizenship and installing some sort of national pride impacting the quality of recruits that are joining the military? Is this further compounded by post-secondary education providing an arguably lopsided perspective of how government and economics should run?
This lack of education can be seen in the lack of voter participation, volunteerism, and participation is civics based organizations.

The less you know about why we exist as a country, and the trials & triumphs we've endured/secured, the easier it is to believe that we are horrible horrible people & we owe the rest of the world everything.
I mean, look at what the younger generation now voting DOESN'T know about civics/American history! these are the people picking our leaders, or RUNNING for leadership (the Congressman that thought an island would tip over into the ocean if it became over-populated comes to mind).

Most young adults cannot pass the same test that naturalizing immigrants must take to become citizens. It is a direct reflection on a lack of effort of our schools and the agenda to get away from thinking like Americans used to think with respect to patriotism and national pride.

They do. If nothing else Virginia mandates a year of US & Va History and a year of US & Va Government in high school, normally taught junior and senior year. Geovernment is also taught in 8th grade.
Voter participation has been low for years and years. Maybe we should join the rest of the world and have voting day on either a holiday or a week end. There are plenty of volunteers. Civics based organizations can loose because so many people move so often.
