People often join gangs because they want a "family" and it is greater than one's self. They are often oblivious to the pain and suffering they will experience when they are officially indoctrinated.

As crazy as it sounds, I believe they join to be able to be a part of. They are doing what they can so that they feel that they too are a part of this terrorist group.

Do they think only men suffer emotionally when their brothers, fathers, wives, uncles, children ... are killed and that only men want revenge? They are Damn Good at Propaganda and Information Warfare. A lot of it gets reinforced by the Xenophobia in the Countries in which they reside.

Obviously lied to. When these mostly very young and impressionable ladies desire to join the IS, I would assess that many of them are promised love, children, protection, family, etc. What they aren't told of course is that they are raped and passed on to the rest of the organization as sex slaves. Of course there are many female terrorists as well that are just as extreme if not more extreme than their male counter-parts. Many, many, female suicide bombers in Africa, especially in countries like Nigeria. But again many girls that are kidnapped are strapped up with explosives and forced to walk into crowds and either blow themselves up or are remote detonated. It's very sad.

As author, Farhana Qazi, surmises there are several reasons. One being no father figure in the household given that he is off fighting a war. This causes me to wonder about the number of gangs in our country and how the family unit fits into the equation. What have we learned over the years of how the family unit plays into child rearing and why can't we overcome this obstacle? With all the brilliant minds in this country we haven't been able to address how to prevent our children from migrating over to the dark side.
