Why 50 points for an upvote and 2 points a reply?

Just always wondered why aren't replies valued more? Anyone can just click the like button. I'm more excited when I get someone to engage in conversation.

A fair question. It would perhaps engage more people in a conversation rather than enable point hunting I think. Perhaps there's a method behind the madness. Admins, any input here?

Because the founders of this site didn't have their rational thinking caps on. Truth be told, the points system is the singlemost negative element of RP.

Cpl Julio Rosa It's just to get you started Julio - as you earn more points for your participation the actual amount of the "VOTE UP" points will level off at 30 points and remain there. The Vote UP means you really liked the question, shared linked, or update provided by the RP Member or Connection. The 2 points for replying is just what it is - you get 2 points. You get 2 points for tagging an individual in one of your posts as well. When RP first designed the point system they felt that rewarding an individual for a great post was more important than just saying, "thanks for the share!". Of course, if you're first to respond you get that Trailblazer 100 points for being on the ball. It's a unique idea that not everyone cares about here on RallyPoint and then there are those that do. I hope that answered your question and if you go to your porfile and click on your current points it will take you to your Influence Score (how much are you participating) - that is the real importance of RallyPoint (how many service members and veterans are accessing the site). This helps the sponsors and advertisers that are bringing the job opportunties and the connection opportunties back to RP each and everyday. If you click on "View my Influence Scores" you'll see the point system and how it is broken down. Maybe SSG Carlos Madden can share more history behind the point system that was orginially designed for RallyPoint. It's about getting more people engaged in RallyPoint at the end of the day!

The up-vote is an effective way to raise the visibility of a discussion and, likewise, a good comment in a discussion up tword the top (just as the down-vote does the exact opposite). As such, I've always viewed the up-vote as incentive to think through what one is posting before posting it. In this way, quality content is encouraged rather than words for the sake of words. Personally, I'm not a point chaser, however, this is my understanding of the rationality of making an up-vote worth so much.
