Me. I didn't want to do like most of my classmates, I wanted to see the world and I was tired of school. Little did I realize what I was in for, Lots more school but on something I rather enjoyed, Telecommunications.

SFC Private RallyPoint Member My father died when I was seven. He was an Air Force Captain, who died when his plane crashed during a training flight. My mother died when I was 15. I joined partly to honor my father's memory, and partly because aiding South Vietnam was a just cause. I was living with my sister, who did not want me to join. All of my friends thought I was crazy for joining.

I had two uncles in the Air Force and every time they came home for a visit I was impressed by them. They never pushed me to join but I knew that's what I wanted. All three of us wound up retiring as CMSgt's.

When I joined the Navy at 17 it was my father.

When I rejoined the National Guard 15 years later it was Osama-bin-Laden.

My stepfather. He gave me 2 choices: get a college scholarship, or join the Army. Either way, he wasn't going to pay for anything, and he was going to kick me out on my 18th birthday. I had no intention of continuing my education beyond high school (because teenager) and decided that following my sister to West Point was super lame. So I tried the least amount possible my senior year, and enlisted just like the rest of my family had always done.

BTW... stepdad didn't like the way I responded, so he accelerated his timetable and kicked me out 3 months before my 18th birthday. Well played, sir. Didn't see that coming!

I am still too young to enlist, but after I graduate high school I am joining the Army. While they never tried to convince me to join, I am proud of, and want to emulate, my SSG grandpa and my SPC uncle. My parents think the army is a waste of my life: how is serving your country a waste of your life?

My brother who served since 1966. He was 1 step going LTJG in medical field. I was opposite with BT on US Chicago CG-11 IN 74..
