I gotta go with Jimmy Stewart. Enlisted as a Private at the beginning of WWII and was a Colonel by the end of it. Also many of the Hollywood stars who did go left the service after the war ended. Stewart stayed on in the Air Force Reserve and eventually retired as a Brigadier General in 1968. He was then promoted to Major General on the retired rolls by President Reagan in 1985.
