So, who wants to give this a try (again)? Looks like the Army is working on it's MREs again!

With that in mind, who here has entertaining/frightening/nauseating MRE stories?

Early versions of the MRE were required to be eaten in order as you'd plug up otherwise. SMs had a problem with that. The worse example of an MRE is a packet entitled "Bean Component: Warning not for Flight or Preflight Use". Your gut would pressurize something fierce if you went up in a plane and they'd be sticky bombs. Only thing I'd know that would overcome the odor of hydraulic fluid on the Hercs.

I really can't relate but I can attest that the C-Rats that we ate in Nam, other then the pound cake and peaches, tasted like shit! Those things had more grease and oil in them then the Motor Pool!

MREs, were my food to go when the food at Bagram gave me the runs, because the MREs were the solution to having the runs, but then I had to go back to the dining hall to unplug me. I looked forward to going out the wire so that we could buy kabobs and fried rice.

I worked as a vet tech and our unit included the food inspectors. One of the food inspectors brought over a case of MRE's that was stinking. They had to decided if it was because of the way the MRE's were stored or if there was another reason. They opened up the case and individual MRE's inside our kennel area for the stray dogs and cats. It was the worst smell imaginable when they found the rotten one. It took days to get the stink out of the kennel. Not even the dog and cat poop was as bad as the stink of the rotten MRE's. I'm very careful about inspecting and opening MREs now.

I ate one at the deer lease. It wasn't bad. Then I checked the ingredients. WAY to much salt. Never ate another one. All canned foods, dried foods etc are preserved with salt. And to believe we were given salt tablets in Nam.

I did this on 2003 for 90 days or so until we got a MKT in the base in IRAQ... it was horrible. 60 day later KELLI OPS finished the New Mess Hall.
