Sometimes snow stayed on the ground for days. If there was enough snow we would build snow forts and have snowball fights over fences which separated the back yards.
When my sons were growing up in Northern, Virginia it snowed less; but' snowballs could still be made as well as snow-forts. I was 21 and home on leave for Christmas. I got ready to go pick up my girlfriend from the airport. She was home on leave from the marines. As I walked out the front door, my brother and his friend (both 15 yrs old) thought they would test their manhood. They wanted to fight me to prove they were stronger. I tried walking away. I had better things to do. They threw snowballs and one hit me in the face. Now it was on. It ended with them both crying from me "whitewashing" their faces.
At the time, I was 6'1" and 196lbs. My brother is 6'6" and his friend 6'4" and both around 240lbs. My mom of course was pissed at me for beating up my "little brother".
As a side note, everyone in my family is tall. Men are 6'2" to 6'8" (except me) and the women are 5'9" to 6'3". I was always sensitive about my height(if you can believe that). My family, especially my dad, picked on my size. My dad even called me the runt of the litter. One night, maybe around 8ish, don't recall my age, maybe 13 or 14, we were hiding in a neighbor's yard after throwing snow balls at a passing car. The guy found us, we tried telling him we were looking for our dog, of course he wasn't having any parts of that BS. I thought we were in for a huge butting kicking.
