Thus began my climbing career. I enjoyed playing on playground equipment; but, I enjoyed much more the comparative freedom of climbing trees in my own yard and neighbors yards after we moved out of Philadelphia to the suburbs. When possible I liked climbing on small cliffs but that was only on vacation. Because of health, balance issues and medications I try to stay on one level now. My climbing is now reduced to gradual hills while I walk :-)
SGT Forrest Stewart, LTC Stephen F. Next to one of the fields was large tree with a wide trunk. The roots were partially above ground. We would climb up the roots, and then up into the tree. There was a wide branch that was so comfortable to sit in the crook of that branch. We would hang out there, and just relax. We would climb up high into the tree just for fun. We had more fun with the trees that we could bend into a "fort" So the trees in general were just great fun when we were growing up. Sometimes I look back and wonder how I never died or broke any limbs. One of my brothers fell out of a tree from pretty high up and broke his arm, but even his experience (that I witnessed from high up in the tree with him) did not deter me from being the little "spider monkey" that I was often referred too. Apparently this is something I have passed on to my children as well. Especially the TV antenna that ran up the side of my parent's house. I would climb it all the way to the top, and hang out on the roof.

We also had this huge Willow tree in our backyard that I was always climbing to the top of. Well, one day I grabbed a twig to climb down and it snapped sending me falling 20 or so feet to the ground. The larger branches farther down helped break my fall and I'm sure saved me from more serious injury. All I suffered from was a little road rash, a severely sprained back, and a broken wrist (possibly when I tried to grab another branch to stop myself from falling. I do know it turned me over and I ended up landing on my chest rather than my back).
