Who else gave up cable/satellite television?

Roughly 6 years ago I decided to give up satellite/cable television. To be honest I got tired of paying for so many channels while only watching 5-10 on a regular basis. At the time I was stationed in Virginia and spent about $40 on a digital TV antenna and have not looked back. I was able to get 12 channels in high definition at no cost.

I found that I wasn't sitting there cruising through the channels all day trying to find something to watch and if nothing was interesting I would find something productive to do around the house. Just curious to see who else decided to give up cable.

Even better, I don't have a television. You will save a bundle of time by not watching crap after work.

- Have not given up cable/satellite but do TIVO everything. I never watch anything live anymore unless it is a sports event. Why spend 30/60 minutes watching a show when I can watch 19/41 minutes?
- If was just me then I would go the 12 channel HD route but with two kids, a wife, and I; our preferences are all different. I like sports, history, sci fi, and action shows/channels. Wife likes throw back stuff like the Waltons, Love Boat, and Rescue 51. Don't know what kids like but it is not what wife/I like.
- If it was just TV then that would be one thing as well but sometimes there are cost savings in bundling Internet, phone, and TV. I can't talk specifics because my wife takes care of that.

Likewise. Shortly after picking up a PS3, I swapped to Streaming services like Hulu & Netflix. For the $20~/month, it has been very much worthwhile compared to cable.

I have had very good luck with the $19/month military expat service that streams over internet 25 Philadelphia PA HDTV channels including ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, PBS, My9, A&E, Animal Planet, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNBC, CNN, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, ESPN, FX, Fox News, History, Lifetime, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Spike, Syfy, TBS, TNT, USA. Sometimes they get overloaded . . . most of the time work just fine . . . at home, office, or wherever I get mobile hotspot up and running . . . like in car.

All that said it may be cheaper to use the account / password from a friend with ATT/etc Cable for streaming.

I share NETFLIX, HULU+, and Amazone PRIME with my daughter for streaming movies and various TV shows.

I have also had very good luck (100+ HDTV channels) using the WA-2605 / WA-2608 HDTV antennas indoors.
But both of these amplified HDTV antennas are directional. I am curious about omnidirectional HDTV antennas.

I guess I'm just a knuckle-dragging schlub... Have cable and subscriptions to Hulu+ and Netflix. How else am I going to see all the great history and British shows my wife and I love. Never watch anything live - have DVR cable boxes so we can fast forward through the commercials. (Of course, we spent this morning watching the best of the Super Bowl commercials on Hulu+ - go figure)

I haven't had cable or satellite since I lived with my parents. Ever since I've been on my own I've always just had internet and it serves my needs just fine. I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime, and if there's something like Game of Thrones or another show that is unavailable to watch online then I have "other means" of being able to watch it.

Our tv only has about 15 stations and it's all in Japanese so I don't get much out of it. But there are several sites that you can watch movies, tv-shows, and even stream live news from some questionable sites.

I did as well. I have internet in my building provided so I use hulu and netflix. My last place I had full HD service and found that I was not watching TV as much to justify it. Then I canceled the HD. Then a few months later they raised the bill for basic cable almost making it as expensive as the HD service. Then I moved where I did not need the cable for the internet anymore which was the primary reason I got it in the first place. So I ditched it all together.

I found with cable I would get almost nothing done around the house. We cut the cord about 6 months ago and now just have Netflix and Hulu and works out great...get A LOT more stuff done, and not just sitting there being brain dead drones.

I gave up cable many years ago it's too expensive for something I only really watched for a couple of hours a week. Hulu Netflix and then download everything else has become the life.

Thats Awesome. Wish i could get my wife to give it up. As long as I had some sports channels i would be G2G.
