Of the two movies, Heartbreak Ridge was nothing more than escapist entertainment - it was not 'grenada' - Jesus H Christ - the scenes of 'Camp Lejeune' look nothing like Lejeune and the homecoming scene is El Toro - bullshit movie. Full Metal Jacket was more real, particularly the drill instructor scenes from the 60s' but again, a caricature. Hartman is well, frankly just terrifying in his blatant bad-arsery. There's no doubt left in the mind that he really DOES see everyone as "equally useless" and that his one mission in life is producing lethally dedicated Marines-Ultimately, he fails to see the biggest threat to his platoon and himself. Highway, by contrast, is a hard-bitten mirror image of the guys he's leading...flawed, but in poignant ways. He's trying to repair a broken relationship, manage careerist superiors, and relate to a "new" generation of Marines who think he's a "has-been". In the end, his tactics elevate his Marines and actually prepare them for the fight of their lives. The fact that he manages to do all of the above while never loosing that 'Blondie' nonchalant attitude leaves you in stitches more than tears. GySgt Hartman (R. Lee Ermy) has authenticity and the more edgy and vulgar nature. Both characters are two of my favorite on screen Marines. I have met R. Lee Ermy twice in person and both times he impressed me with the way he treated service members and the general public. For that reason alone, I will have to lean slightly towards GySgt Hartman especially since he adlibbed the first scene of Full Metal Jacket.
