Who are some good science fiction writers?

I'm a fan of Ben Bova myself. I've not read all of his, and look forward to acquiring more of his books. When I was younger, I read a lot of the Halo books, my favorite author of those thus far being Eric Nylund. Any suggestions for some good science fiction (obvious and obscure ideas equally welcome by me)?

Of course you have the old stand by of Tolkien. I love his translation of Beowulf more than anything else. Followed by his translation of Sigurd and Gudrun

David Weber, known for: Safehold series, Honor Harrington series, Empire of Man series, some 1632(Ring of Fire) books
Karen Traviss, known for: Star Wars Republic Commando series, Wes'har Wars, Gears of War books, Halo books
Christopher Nutall, known for: Ark Royal series, Empires Corps series, Democracy series numerous single titles
Jay Allan, known for: Crimson Worlds series, Portal Wars Series
Aaron Allston, known for: wrote half of the Star Wars X-Wing series and Fate of the Jedi series
H. Paul Honsinger, known for: Man of War series

these are just a few that I have in my kindle library. Who ever invented Amazon's one-click purchase system is a very evil person

One I'm following right now is Christopher G. Nuttall and his Empire`s Corps series. I've been impressed. Another is L.E. Modesitts Chaos series. He combines science fiction, fantasy and technology rather uniquely. I'm kinda partial to both Zombie and TEOTWAWKI books. Peter Clines "Ex" series. These are all good.

Robert Heinlein, isaac Asimov are some of my favorites. L. Ron Hubbard although not normally thought of as a science fiction guy, his Mission Earth series of ten books is quite good.

Hey, here is another great author and Veteran, SFC John F. Holmes. I believe he is retired now. He has written some really entertaining zombie novelS which are better than cheap B movies.

Go to http://www.Baen.com many or even most of the current SCIFI writers are there. You can find almost anything there. They also offer many older books for free download. My current favorites are John Ringo and Larry Correia they are both great fun for more military type, Patricia Briggs and Faith Hunter offer different aspects on vamps and were's. Always loved Anne McCaffery, Andre Norton, Heinlein, Frank Herbert's Dune. Happy Reading to all.

Top of my list of self discovered books as a young teen in the school library was Robert A. Heinlein. Time for the Stars was the first I read of his. I loved his style of writing. So I read another. Stranger in a Strange Land. I was forever hooked on one of the greatest Sci-Fi writers of all time. Still am. I'm on a quest to purchase all his books in hard cover 1st editions.

On another note, has anyone read the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison? Probably geRed towed the younger crowd, but if you're up for a mix of science fiction and a lot of comedy, it's a fun read.

I've always been a fan of Arthur C Clarke. I've read most of his more well known stuff. Michael Crichton is another obvious one. Andy Weir has The Martian, so we'll see what he comes up with next.
