But Specialist Six E-6 was my most interesting and misunderstood rank at times in the 80s. Try as I might I was unable to attain the rank either while on active duty or during a year in the reserves. E5 was always my goal in life at the time because Sgts seemed to have tremendous responsibilities and the authority to get things done. They had the well-deserved respect of everyone and also seemed to have the answer for any question from E4 & below. So, of the ranks I've held I would say my current rank of SrA has been my favorite. It came with the ability to move out of the dorms and off base which I love. You get some more responsibility and trust from leadership but you are also still an Airmen so mistakes (though they should be fewer) aren't the end of the world. The hardest, but most successfully challenging, was SGT (E5). I was part of a very close-knit team that had been together for 2 years. Suddenly, I was the Team Chief. It was tough at first, but turned out working great. My next two teams were also awesome experiences. My next really challenging rank, but where I learned the most about how the Army really worked and about taking care of Soldiers was 1SG (E8). Busier than a one-armed paper hanger. But every minute was filled with something important for Soldiers. What a challenge learning all about field ops, field mess ops, barracks maintenance, personnel rules, UCMJ, and so many other things. Great opportunity if you ever get the chance! My ver favorite, though, had to be CSM. A great Battalion Commander, XO, S1, and S3, with some good Company COs and 1SGs. I was really able to be relaxed, be a mentor, enjoy my time, spend a lot of time with Soldiers, help solve a lot of problems, accomplish many good things for the unit, get to know my Soldiers very well, and have a great deal of fun. It was probably the best time of my life, bar none. Made it easy to make the decision to retire, because I knew I'd never have a better assignment than that one.
