I was stationed at Ft. Richardson in Alaska and thought I was gonna hate it, I was wrong. The barracks were new. Rarely worked after 5. Cold, yes but the wildlife I saw made up for it. Many who I keep in touch with look back at our time in Alaska as the best time of their lives, many chose to live there after getting out. I was at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. I loved it, but I knew some folks that hated it. For every base somebody likes there will be just as many people that dislike it. First I had Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Not fun, still WWII barracks, but basic training is basic training. Not Fun, I endured. Second, and best was the Army Language School, in Monterrey Cal. Wonderful place, great weather, good accommodations, albeit still, WW II barracks. Modern Mess Hall and Modern Classrooms. The best of three I was at. Then to a base in Petaluma Ca. Beautiful location, modern facilities, good duty. That is second on my ancient list. The third, but not too bad location was in a suburb of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. We had Korean War-type Quonset Huts modernized to 1960 standards. For a "Hardship Tour," the facilities weren't too bad, the food was great, we had a movie theater, hobby shop, a photoshop, a library and all the trappings of home. Not bad duty for being in an Army base in Korea for 16 months. I was in a good part of the Army, got good rank and they treated up well because we were "special". I can't tell you more or I'd have to kill you. Not! Think about it, how many people have been to all the Army bases in the world? Or even half? A quarter? As much as Soldiers travel, it's a big army and 90% of us see only a fraction of our footprint. You will not get a good answer to this question because people don't have the ability to give you an accurate answer; it's all subjective, not scientific. You would need a team to actually visit each base and rack and stack bases according to some point system.

The better question is, what should I look for when determining the quality of an Army base?

And on that I would tell you to look at leadership. See who is charge of the post, housing office, community programs, etc. What always matters is people. Think people-oriented first, and material-oriented second. 1LT Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 09 Aug 2021 22:34:48 -0400 2021-08-09T22:34:48-04:00 2021-08-09T00:37:40-04:00
