Where would you not want to go on deployment?

Every branch has a stigma against certain deployment locations. Where would you NOT want to get stationed and why?

If I was still in, I don't think I would want to go to the middle East. I'm a cool weather person.

Well, I already spent time on Adak, so that cut's down the places that suck just because of their location a bit. Other than that, almost anywhere in Sub Sahara Africa except Cameroon.

Korea, you're not technically deployed but you also have restrictions almost like you are. I've heard its the worst of both worlds.

Although I've been out since 1968 a deployment to Korea would not be a place I want to go,this is based on some of the replacements we received that were stationed there,we were in the Central Highlands of Vietnam at the time fighting the NVA,made me wonder how bad it was they transferred out to to join us in our little fracase!

The few times I have been around Africa were pretty damn hot and miserable. Ill pass on another trip there.

Quite a variety of locations with a different suck factor. The most physically draining was Horn of Africa as you could never get away from the heat. The opposite end was 3 deployments to Antarctica which I thought were great. SE Asia has the humidity and the odors that will never leave your mind. And the sandbox had a way of making any MRE crunchy. All that said, the ones I liked least were where both the work and the people you were stuck with leaving a lot to be desired. Fortunately, I had a lot of mobility in the AOR so had the incentive to get the project done and the hell out of there and on to the next one. I will say Cambodia in the mid '90s was more than interesting and dicey.

One person's heaven is another person's hell. I can't imagine Great Lakes but my Chief loved it there. Spent eight years in Hawaii and enjoyed it very much. Most people say they would go nuts on a small island. I think Adak would be my special hell. Hate cold weather.

Japan... anywhere in or around Japan. Don't get me wrong. I love Japanese culture and I would love to go there some day. But not as a Marine. Every time I came close to getting the opportunity to go to Japan, there was some incident that happens, base goes on lockdown and Marines are looked at less than favorably. No thank you...

LTJG Private RallyPoint Member Shipyard, Anywhere, Dry Dock Sucks still have 24 hour duty once every 4 days while in Homeport and Dry Dock is Dirty, Nasty, Noisy and can't do what You Were Trained to do. Adak could be a bit Miserable Sometimes.

I don't think I had any place that I really didn't want to go, I looked forward to going anywhere new at least once. I have a few that I don't care to return to. Korea, Honduras, Marshall Islands are a few, not that I didn't have some good times while there and the job/work wasn't bad but been there done that no need to go back.

I only want to be somewhere where there is a mission where we do something.
Stuff like "deterrence" sitting in a place like Kuwait, Qatar... no thank you.
If Uncle Sam orders me away from home, he needs to make sure I have something of importance to do.

I was at Ft Polk twice once in the late 70s and then in the early 90s and it was pure hell both times
