Where should I live around Ft Benning?

Need some advice on areas to live around ft Benning with good schools. I prefer to live on in Alabama if possible.

Phenix City is closest, just across the river from Columbus, or Ft. Mitchell which isn't too far either. Not sure of the schools as my kids were all grown when I retired out of Benning 2 years ago. Best bet is check out what you can on the net as far as schools if that is most important for you.

Fort Mitchell probably nicest if you have a good size family. Homes are cheap with a lot if land. Stay completely out of columbus homes are overpriced and crime is a pretty serious issue.

Can't help you on schools SSG as I Thankfully have none yet lol.

I will suggest booking at Extended stay. The rates are really cheap, and the rooms are nice. Comes with full kitchen and you can check out pots/pans cutlery and other stuff. Was awesome for my wife and I when we got here. I'll dig up the link and get it to you.

If you're going to live on the Georgia side, the houses and apartments off of exit 10 and 12 are nice....but it's going to be a bit of a drive to work.

Hampton Place Apartment (past the mall) were nice when we lived there in the 90s.

I liked the Alabama side of the river. Russell County Alabama is really nice.

Depends how close to post you want to be as well.
If Alabama is the preferred, Ft Mitchell would be a good bet. Newer homes, McMansions, along with a bit of a rural feel. Smiths Station would be another. Phenix City would be good if you want to be close to downtown Columbus activities. Dont know about the schools though. Property Taxes and rent are generally lower.
Ive lived in Columbus since I got stationed here in 06 and stayed after retirement in the same house we bought 2.5 months after arriving. Lived in an apartment in Green Island Hills and the Howard Johnsons before that. One of the selling points was the schools. The ones in my part of the county are good. I live of of exit 6 on 12th Ave. I wouldnt live below exit 7. More crime ridden. My area isnt bad, it has its issues. The city is planning on rezoneing the area to bring in more families as owners and bring down the crime. The area is historical. Lakebottom area is nice. Close to downtown. Property Taxes are higher here. Crime is the same in both Phenix City and Columbus.
Best bet is to do the research, come out look around and see what suits. Hearing others opionion is one thing, seeing for your self is another.
Oh if it was up to me I would have moved back to Colorado Springs after I retired where I was stationed 95-00. Loved it, but lost that one cause the wife wanted to Stay here.

So I'm seeing that nobody really answered your question So here you go Ft.Mitchell though convenient to FT Benning the crime rate is much Higher and Schools are probably last place on the education scale phenix City still have high crime rates schools a little better but not much best bet is ladonia, Smiths Station or Salem they all are somewhat rural areas smiths station probably has the best schools in the area and those three towns I mentioned fall into smiths Stations school district

Fort Mitchell is nice, I have a house there. The only down side is if you like shopping it is a bit of a drive to go to any stores (i.e. target, wal-mart, etc.).

So where did you go get a place? I am looking for a place right now down here. I think I just found a good place in Phenix City.
