Where do you get your motivation to come to work and do what you do, day in and day out?

SFC Private RallyPoint Member, I may be retired Navy and working for the AIr National Guard as a contractor, but my main source of motivation is my rather generous paycheck! :>)

My motivation sounds rather simple: my supervisor is a great leader (she's excellent at balancing work lives with personal lives among her employees and she's an expert in her field); my team is the perfect mix of personalities (we all excel at complementary skills and we actually enjoy working together); the overall environment(s) in which we work is/are not hostile or toxic in any way; and it helps that I love what I do. I'm quite happy with my work, and that makes it very easy to get up and go every day.

I think everyone has rather personal reasons for either being motivated or being unmotivated to get up and go every day. For me, the actual work environment (as in personnel interactions and professionalism) is a big indicator of how long I stay motivated, and the job itself being complimentary to my skill set.

I still propose that mental health days be instituted nationwide, because sometimes you just need a break.

I entered the work force and then the military before I was 18. Work ethic in my home area was among the best in the country. We were taught it.

Now, I am retired. I get up in the morning, decide what I want to do, and go to bed wondering why I didn't do it.

The easiest motivation is my two awesome kids.

Other factors like enjoying have a roof over my head and food in belly follow closely by.

SFC Private RallyPoint Member Its self-inflicted motivation. If you have it, then you will never have to ask this question. I'm self-motivated and I have disciplined myself to keep that level of energy in everything I take on. I love to work, I love to ride my motorcycle, I love to play music, I love to achieve, I love to take care of my family and daughters, and I just don't like to give up on anything I set out to do. Some people might say that I'm an exception to the rule, but I don't think so. It comes from within. It’s a desire that all of us have. You need to learn how to ignite it yourself. If you let defeat or disappointment get the best of you then I believe that has a direct effect on your attitude and those around you. I've failed at many things, marriage, my own businesses, and other projects, but I know how to brush it off and move forward and for me that is self-motivation. Brush the dust off, drum up that inner “eagle attitude” that you can soar, and get right back into the game.

First every morning I lift. This is my self regulation.
Then I do a little tactical breathing in the gym or during the day. I teach others to look for the good and reflection on it so I practice this myself to help with my optimism.

In my civilian job, the motivation is that I get to meet all kinds of new and interesting people every day and I get paid to stab them. In the Army, the motivation is to push my Soldiers to become better than me and hope to see them excel and surpass me in rank (weird, I know).

I actually really enjoy being a 915A warrant officer. I enjoy having the space to really focus on the mission and being the problem solver. I like building the maintenance program the way that I like it. I like that Soldiers and NCOS look up to myself and the other warrants. Hopefully I will be able to improve the maintenance program enough to where my replacement is set up for success by the time I PCS.

I saw this the other day... However, when it comes to my CAREER as a SM, I love what I do. There is a HUGE difference between WORK and a CAREER. "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life." Working with civilians makes me want to beat my head against a desk or wall somedays...
