I'm from NYC and wanted to be at McGuire. PCS'd every 2-3 years trying for it but kept "missing". Texas. Europe, Washington State, Middle East, North Carolina, Korea, and then FINALLY got it for my jumping off point.

I wanted to see California. I graduated my MOS School 3rd in a class of 90 so I got to pick between five different duty stations. I chose MCAS El Toro and went to Southern California. I wanted to go Germany, but never got the chance.

Hawaii, Germany and Fort Ord.
Ended up getting stationed in Korea and that set the baseline/foundation for my career.
Later down the line I was open to being stationed anywhere in CONUS or OCUNUS.

I requested Sea Duty as my first choice and Embassy Duty as my 2nd choice. Later in my career I had several options but decided to be transferred from active to reserve status in order to return to Boston College.

SMSgt Tony Barnes I wanted to go to Germany, so I went in 1990 then on to Fort Ord, California. I am so happy to have served during the early 1990's there is nothing like it. Later in my career I wanted to go to Fort Lewis, WA. To be honest I LOVE THE WEST COAST and I love the Oceans. It's nothing like the majestic Pacific Ocean, I am currently RETIRED at Joint Base Langley Eustis(Fort Eustis), Virginia and yes the Ocean is 45 minutes away. I love water.

I wanted to be stationed on Randolph AFB, but there was no slot open, so I got Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland AFB...which turned out to be a really KEWL assignment.

I honestly didn't know any bases really before I came in other than Minot and Grand Forks since I live in ND and Lackland and Keesler since I knew that's where my training would be. Once I was given the opportunity to choose at Lackland which bases I wanted on my list my number one was Andrews, the whole presidential support thing seemed awesome. Little did I know that that wasn't an actual option and when it all boiled down our only options in weather were the Hub bases, Scott, Barksdale, Davis-Monthan and Shaw. We really didn't get to choose even still though, my whole class aside from the Marines and guard were assigned to Scott.

Really Scott was my destiny from the beginning, I just didn't know it at the time.

I wanted to stay state side at Sill but I got orders to Germany. I was very happy once I got there. A five day live fire in Crete made it all the better. Later in my career I wanted Hawaii but I got Alaska and I was very greatful for that one as well.

When I first got in I wanted to be close to home but my first duty station was Camp Schwab Okinawa, Japan. I never regretted that either. Now I want to go to Hawaii and hopefully end my career there. The mantra for me for now is " I started my career on a tropical island now I have to end it on one."

When I first came in I knew I wanted to be overseas. At Tech School I made a big X on a map with the top left in Korea, Bottom right in Greece, Bottom left in the Philippines and the top right in England. I was blessed to spend 12.5 years of my career doing tours overseas in Korea, Crete Greece, Philippines, Germany, and Guam. Of course every base I was stationed at in my whole career has been closed except for three, but that's the way it goes. It was an unbelievable ride. Loved every minute of it.

I had a guaranteed first duty station. A little place called Vint Hill Farm Station in northern VA. It was heaven on Earth. Did some cool TDYs from there too. Later in my career I was "stuck" at Ft. Lewis, put in for all the worst places overseas just to get out of there. Our 1SG made threats at S-1 for losing everybody's dream sheets & 4187s. When the dust settled, we all got choice assignments. I got Hawaii. Ended up meeting my wife there & our daughter was born there. That worked out great.

Naive as it may sound, I spoke passable French and German when I enlisted and would have love to have been stationed in Europe but of course the war in Korea was a major concern then so that is where I was sent. I have no regrets though since it allowed me to learn another language.

I wanted to be in TOG with a vengeance, but they weren't taking men anymore just females (back in 94 when MP's were allowed in), so I got assigned to the MP company on Myer. Little did I know I'd be wearing the SAME damn uniforms they did, to the same damn standards they had, and we'd all be standing around forf*cking ever. The only way to tell us apart was the fact that the non TOG MP's wore badges on their Blues with the White MP service cap, and instead of the dress belt, we wore shined leather gear for our 92FS, cuff holders, and magazine holders. Later on my dream unit was WHCA, but fate intervened and I was destined to be part of the Big Red One. To this day I love me some Riley (minus the weather, Ogden, Junction City, and Rally Point on post), and if I could go back in, I'd haul my fat a** to riley and be happier than a fat kid with cake....until the first division run. Those suck running on Custer Hill, but it adds to the suckage period. If you're not complaining, then something's wrong and some CSM or 1SG hasn't pissed in your Wheaties yet.

After “A” school I wanted a NTDS equipped ship out of Charleston SC, but none were had. So I settled for a NTDS cruiser out of Norfolk, a location I had not wished to serve. As with all assignments, it is what you make of it. After many years as an East Coast sailor I longed for Asia and had my opportunity when I commissioned into the Air Force with a duty assignment at Yokota AB, Japan. Yokota was a great assignment that I put up there with RAF Mildenhall, UK….both places were simply great!

Overseas. Went from Lackland, to Keesler to Dyess. Went from Dyess to King Salmon Alaska and then to a five year controlled tour at KI Sawyer. Managed a couple of great TDYs to RAF Fairford and Ramstein (and Maastricht). Then transferred to US Navy as an Ensign. Managed to see a number of foreign ports, just none accompanied by family.

I joined the Marine Corps because I felt that helping South Vietnam was the right thing to do, so I wanted to go to Vietnam. When I left Vietnam, they asked me to provide three duty stations that I would like to go to. I responded with MCRD San Diego, MCB Camp Pendleton, and Naval Weapons Station, Concord, Ca. They kept me in California, but it was at MCB 29 Palms.

I came out of the reserves as an A-10 Crew Chief, I wanted RAF Bentwaters or Suwon AB, ROK. They said that they wouldn't send me overseas in case I was a F#@k-up. So they sent me to Myrtle Beach instead :)

I enlisted in USN in 1969; after book camp (Bainbridge, MD) off to Great Lakes, IL to learn how to be a Hospital Corpsman. My request was California (family there); but ended up at NAS Jacksonville, FL; final duty station Orlando, FL (saw lots of young men back from Vet Nam suffering all kinds of injuries) made me a better person.
