Where are the best Cheesesteaks made?

I am not sure where the cheesesteak originated. In Philadelphia submarine sandwiches were referred to as hoagies if served cold and grinders if they had hot meats. Other places called submarine sandwiches subs including Subway. I expect many RallyPoint members have eaten cheese steaks - some with merely the thinly sliced steak, others with steak plus grilled onions, and or peppers; while others like everything possible piled on top. :-)
Do you like cheesesteaks? If so where did you enjoy them the most?

My Favorite cheesesteaks have been prepared in Philadelphia - South Philadelphia at Pat's Steaks eaten outside by the walk-up window on a cool fall evening; eaten inside in center city and other places around Philadelphia. Lately I have enjoyed cheesesteaks prepared at Jersey Mike's restaurants. There is one near where I live in Sterling, Virginia. My favorite cheesesteak consists of thinly sliced steak, provolone cheese, grilled onions with a side of hot crips french fries and a cold birch beer.

LTC Stephen F., I have never eaten a good cheesesteak sandwich. I don't know of any restaurants around here that have them like they have in Pa.

If I don't make it myself (preferred) It has to be from Supreme Roast Beef in Danvers Mass. The old Mediterranean in Haverhill was real good, but it's gone now.

The first Cheese cake I ever had ... and forever steal my love is New York Cheese Cake ... I was poor and working two jobs ... one in a delivery and the other is waiting table. One day my boss is so happy with the sale of the day, he offer me a cheese cake ... and the story end.

This is gonna sound crazy, but the best cheesesteak sandwich(es) I have ever eaten were at the county fair. Steak, grilled peppers and onions, mushrooms, provolone and a light splash of marinara sauce on a soft 8" Hoagie Roll. So freaking good I ate two.....then went back to the fair three more nights, just to have them for supper.

I have often wondered about the relationship between the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and the French Dip. The French Dip purportedly originated at Felipes in Los Angeles. I've eaten there and their French Dip is one of the worst I've ever had. So, if anyone attempts to claim that French Dip is just another name for Cheesesteak, you don't have to worry about Felipes taking the title. Actually, the best French Dip sandwich I ever had was at a small roadside diner in Idylwild, California. However, I like my French Dip sandwiches sans cheese so that disqualifies mine from contention. Here in California I've had some pretty good facimiles of a Philly Cheesesteak at Philly's Best and The Great Steak Escape - both chained operations. Philly's Best is the only one offering Tastykake for dessert (the only way to end a cheesesteak lunch). For authentic cheesesteak, I'd have to go with Philly. If you can't find a good cheesesteak, try a Chicago Style Italian Dip. Very similar but accented with Italian spices (principally oregano). We're fortunate here to have a branch of a Chicago chain nearby.

being an over the road truck driver I've eaten at most truck stops fast food joints and some decent restaurants you would think that would make me an expert 30 years of being a professional tourist I prefer subway
