When staying off post do I have to keep the cost under the local per diem rate or the cost of on post lodging?

I report to Ft Sam Houston at the beginning of next month and I am authorized 10 days of temp lodging. All post lodging is booked for this time period so I will have to find a place off post. Does anyone know if I have to keep the cost under the local per diem rate (120 per night) or the on post rate (100 per)? I should note that since it is now privatized lodging they won't issue SNA/CNAs.

If housing is not available you need to get a Statement of Non-Availability number from the housing office. Most hotels will give you the government rate once you show them your orders.

Missed the no SNA part. You need to stay under the local per diem or lodging cost. Usually the government rate is within what the regulation requires.

Post guest housing will issue SNLs which ill authorize you off posting rates.

The piece that's missing here is once you have your QNA slip, you can stay anywhere, but you'll only get reimbursed up to the established lodging rate. Many lodging outfits price their stuff at/near that ceiling preferably including all taxes. However if the total daily cost is $5 bucks above, that will come out of your pocket. So you don't "have" to keep the cost under.
