When I worked for a local orchard years ago, we planted in mid April, not too cold and plenty of rain to get the tree started.

Think it depends on where you live. Spring in most of US, but after summer heat in warm areas like Florida and desert Southwest. Key point is plant one, good for environment and will give you years of enjoyment.

Early spring and in autumn are best. Summer is not advised but is practiced in certain areas. Deciduous trees are best left alone unless trimming in the dormant winter months as a newly planted tree does not have the ability to properly establish it's root system into the new soil and only has about a 50% survival rate if re-planted.
