Protein
So after deciding to join "everyone else" and buying protein to have with my workout (whey not the creatine) I heard from different people when I am supposed to drink it. So do you drink yours before or after working out?

My workout fiends (proper spelling) tell me within 20 minutes of the end of your lifts is the period of maximum nutrition uptake. Since those are the folks making gains, they're the ones I listen to. So even if you are following up with some cardio, slam the protein drink as soon as you do your last lift.

Within an hour following a workout. Preferably as soon after as possible.

Sir, it depends on your desired results. Drink before to bulk up, drink during to fuel longer workouts, drink after to get lean (my goal)

Also, my favorite protein powder is Syntha6 hands down! I have chocolate and I swear they just fill the jug with nestle quick powder and mark the price up! No nasty protein taste and it blends equally well with water or milk (I use almond milk cuz I'm lactose intolerant).

And you're welcome in advance ;-)

When, if at all, do you drink your protein: before or after working out?

Both. I take a 'normal' protein approx 30-60 mins before workout. I then take a mass gainer protein w/in 30 mins of finishing my workout. I have put on approx 30lbs of muscle

*Hulks out...yet somehow still manages to keep the same size purple pants on around the no-no zone...hmmm*

After is the best time to take a protein drink. I leave a drink in my truck and right after I leave the gym I drink it. During the workout you should be drinking something with BCAAs. For a BCAA supplement I use SciVation Xtend. I get the watermelon or strawberry/kiwi. It taste great and mixes well. What’s your goal? Weight loss? Gain muscle? Here’s an interesting article on the three fuel sources your body uses and the order in which your body will try to use them. http://www.virtualmedstudent.com/links/healthy_living/understanding_how_the_body_burns_carbs_proteins_fats_simple.html

If you're drinking it before, you're doing it wrong.

When do I take my protein? Well, right before I work out. I crush it up and snort it in order to get the instant effect. No, just playing, I am to old and to broken to use that stuff.

Broken muscle tissue starts recruiting protein for rebuilding fairly soon. So provide an external source within 15 to 20 minutes post work out for best results.

Me, I hit McDonald's right after the gym for a big Mac, then I eat 4 or 5 beef sticks.

Can't figure out why I'm not losing weight though. :)

You don't know the half of it sir. I am long distance commuter for Drills. Nothing near my hotel but fast food crap all weekend and weekend DFAC lunch.

1LT John Martin, Sir the McD comment was meant as sarcasm. Although, studies have shown that it does not matter what the protein source is; only that it is consumed soon after a workout. If it were not for the high fat content and preservatives in most fast food, it would be a perfectly fine option. If you can stomach the flavor, that is.

I habitually have my protein shake right after a work out because I am always starving! Or I have a meal that is packed with protein, if shakes aren't an option.

SPC(P) Samantha Moore that is what I do. Though after working out I really do not think of cooking at all!

Cooking lunch (kids) is part of my schedule, so it is routine for me. But when I am not in a cooking mood, I go for the shakes (and pb&j for the kids). What is your favorite protein shake brand/type?
