Just my former professional opinion, but I’ve been retired since ‘00 so things have changed a bit! Don’t be afraid to call them. You might actually work with the NCOs making your assignment one day like I did! By also calling now, you might request if you can get a school enroute or post assignment well, and if a slot is open, guess what, free school without lost enlistment option... Play the game! At least that’s the way things used to work! But if your up for reenlistment that would be your best option. Unless there is a need to move the SM due to mission requirements.
