When applying for top Secret security clearance, will the investigator look at your tax records and find out your history of employment?

A financial analysis will be done and while reviewing tax records is not standard course, I could see them looking at the records if you had a significant assets that did not match with your obvious income. As for interviews, the investigator will talk to a many people as necessary to confirm you trustworthiness. Since I work in an office where everyone has a clearance we get interviewed during reinvesigations frequently. Most of the time the final question will be something along the lines of do you know someone who knows X that we should interview?

They will look at what they feel they need to look at and will talk to whomever they feel they need to. Relax.

They won't have to look at your taxes to find your work history because that is part of the information you will divulge. If you lie on a TS request, they will absolutely discover it.

I had a guy who said he never did drugs. Made it through training and was at his first duty station when the investigation was finished. Turned out, everybody knew he used to smoke weed. His clearance was yanked immediately and he got a new job and a new duty assignment very quickly.

back in the day when they gave Me mine,, they even went back to my home-town & interviewed mostly all my friends & family & high school 'cause people told me of the "Men-In-Black visiting them & asking questions about Me ! I heard at that time in History it cost $15,000.00

Yep, DIS agents will descend upon your hometown and other places you you have lived and talk to folks you listed and get names from them for folks you have not listed and talk to them. Stop by your local cop shop and talk to them. When they finish they will know more about you than you know about yourownself.

Yes, they will. For a TS, they tend to be very thorough. Case in point, in 2008 I married my wife. Somehow they found out her 80 year old uncle served with the German Army during WWII. This delayed my clearance renewal 6 months because they had to send a DIS agent into the German countryside to go interview him and that apparently takes some coordination with the German government. BLUF: make sure whatever you put on that EQIP is straight and as accurate as possible. If you feel a piece of info is even slightly relevant, make sure you include it.
