Sadly, the wife at the time wouldn't allow me to blow that much money on a uniform that I didn't need lol. But my dad, a retired Command Master Chief, has both the blue and white jackets for mess dress. My mother likes to tell the story of when he first bought it. It was I the early 90s and we were stationed at NAS Alameda and my dad had just made Master Chief. My mom had won a raffle for the Navy Ball in San Francisco. I'm not sure, but I think it was held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Fran, and was going to be very fancy (COMPACFLT was the guest of honor, I think). Anyway, my mom decided she was going to pull out all the stops; new dress and didn't care of it was on sale, hair, nails, makeup, etc. Spent quite a lot.

My dad still spent more on his mess dress blues. I know for the Navy it's required once you make O4, but I actually bought mine at O2. It was a situational thing. As a chaplain we do A LOT of functions. The situation that caused me to purchase the dinner dress white jacket (what we call our mess dress) was that I had a wedding, a dining out, and a change of command ceremony all within a few days of each other, and all calling for the service dress white uniform (SDW). Since I had to wear the SDW for the change of command I opted to purchase the dinner dress white jacket for the dining out. I just didn't trust making it through two events prior to the change of command without getting something on that glaring white uniform. I was married in evening mess blues, and to me, it was worth every penny. A proper black tie or white tie ensemble is very striking, and should be worn with confidence.

When an invitation calls for black tie, etiquette calls for more than a suit with a black tie. Black tie is a strict dress code which mandates a tuxedo with a black bow tie (absolutely not a four-in-hand tie). Tuxedo lapels are also different from suits, as they are not notched. If you are to attend a black tie affair, and would like to represent your service, or the event is of a military nature, the mess uniform corresponds to the tuxedo. If you are to attend a black tie affair, the ASU simply will not do; it would be poor etiquette. The Class A uniform corresponds to business attire. Although we wear a bow tie in the Dress Blues variation, I would venture to say it corresponds to cocktail or formal dinner attire, which by etiquette is a bit flashier than business attire, yet still lacks the formality of black tie. Only white tie (AKA: white tie with tails, or "full fig") is above black tie in formal evening wear. Corresponding to white tie with tails is the "evening mess" variation. As the most formal attire, it is extremely rare, essentially limited to presidential or royal galas. So, unless you opt to wear it for your wedding, it's unlikely you'll ever wear it. An advantage to the mess uniform, however, it's essentially black tie and white tie, in one purchase. Evening mess is not an expensive variation: only a tie, shirt, and vest. If you're attending someone else's wedding, remember it would be improper to outshine the happy couple. So, if you're likely to be the only one in uniform, it may seem peacockish, especially if you're not in the wedding party. On the other hand, when the other gentlemen look the same, your mess uniform will be distinguished, and will always outclass a rented tux. I did it because I truly believe that if you are a Senior NCO then you should not attend any ball or formal function in your Class A uniform with a bow tie. In my opinion that is not what a Senior NCO should do, that is what the lower enlisted do because they don’t have the money. But at the Senior levels it should be required, just like in the US Navy. Once an NCO gets promoted to Chief, they are expected to have such uniforms. Anything additional to that? Well, There better question is why are there additional "social acceptances" beyond what our Commanders have required? IF there is such a thing that could paint you in a negative light for not wearing something specifically detailed as required- the better question is...why? Now, I'm not by any stretch saying I'm not naive to the nature of the question, I myself have gone "above and beyond" to fit into my branches own accepted social norms. My beef is with the question itself. IF it's deemed "unsavory" to show up in the legally acceptable uniform of the day, but that particular uniform is "socially unacceptable" I'm not quite sure of the "Commander's Intent" who issued the original order to begin with. In other words, if it's "bad" to show up in the "bare minimum" why not change the rule? Oh, I get it...I think...Perhaps we need to provide the opportunity for others to shine by taking the "initiative". Forgive me. That sounds a lot like politics. Serve your country the best you can by following the rules and regulations set forth. The military was not meant to be Socrates Philosophical Arm, it was meant to fight foreign disputes and protect the American People. If our leaders frown upon the uniforms they told us to wear- change it- and we will comply. Personal opinion need not apply. The only reason I gave it up in retirement is that the little chain that votes it has gone from about two inches to sufficient length to anchor a carrier (in deep water). Problem being, this was during the middle of a field training cycle for us. One of our NCO's went and spent the money to buy it, and he and the battalion commander were the only people at that dinner wearing that uniform. to top it off, that NCO had a pal in the BN HQ that knew this was coming down, so he had the advanced warning to go and buy the uniform, arrange to get all the appropriate medals, arrange for fittings, and get the okay from pal as to the appearance and fit of that uniform. Nobody else had the time to waste on this "show off"debacle. Luckily for us, the BN CO caught on, and changed the dress requirement for the rest of us. Maybe Senior Officer and HQ types. But most of our units were way too small for balls etc. Heck the biggest unit outside of TAD for training was 87 officers and enlisted. Average size for the units I was at would be between 15 and 20. I wear it two or three times per year and have never regretted the purchase. I feel senior NCOs should make the purchase but I also feel like more units should involve their members in formal functions. There are lots of great lessons learned for junior members going to theses formal affairs and conducting them selves with proper bearing and manners. It’s another aspect of life we senior members can impart on junior members. For those who enjoy looking sharp and attending formal events its a great way of drawing attention to themselves. Like many things in life - you either get it or you don't.

Is it worth it?
This is strictly a matter of personal opinion. The current rate for the Marlow White Blue Mess officer package is $629.00. (Or about 1% of the annual take home pay of a senior Captain.) If you have it for 10 years and wear it 3 times a year (military ball, branch awards night like St. Barbara's and a dining in) that's 30 wearings or, about 21 dollars a wearing. Is it worth 21 dollars to look great? Some will say yes and some will say no.

BTW - since we are on the topic of mess uniforms - Mess uniforms should NOT be worn at weddings! Mess uniforms are evening wear for dinners and the like. Weddings are daytime affairs when the full dress uniform with full sized medals and straight tie (not a bow tie) should be worn.
