My customer was a mother and daughter who escaped Jordan 8 months earlier and legally resettled in the US. They were renting a home and had very little otherwise, no furniture but for a table and 2 chairs. A coworker had called on my nextel 2way to tell me what was happening so I quickly got the cable hooked up to get their TV on. Almost immediately I heard screaming as my elderly customer began to wail in terror. I and her daughter ran into the TV room to see why and the video replay of the first plane. I was certain she had family in the towers by the way she acted but when I questioned her, her daughter translated that, "America was the last place to go to escape the terror and we aren't even safe here." Within minutes I was finished and a meal they'd prepared for me, I had respectfully consumed and left. Comcast ordered all installers to leave Dearborn as reports rolled in of celebrations in the streets and back yards. The news lied. I was there and it was somber like in any other American communities, people's eyes glued to their tvs, crying and sadness. No one was celebrating, no dancing in the streets, no one shouting, "death to America" or "Allah ocbar", just tears of loss as their nation became, under attack. In the months following that day, news sensationalized Dearborn connections to terrorism and their businesses that may have funded the attacks. All of the media outlets lied about the good and patriotic Americans living in Dearborn, creating enemies where they didn't exist prior. Still... there wasn't any dancing in the streets and my customers were as devastated and saddened as my customers in Royal Oak, a rich white kid community. But that wasn't portrayed on tv in the news and later in cop shows. Where's the good in all this? We are the good. We are the people who think before we jump on the wagon to war. We questioned the narrative and allied ourselves with other loyal Americans. The propaganda be damned. We triumph over ignorance and find brotherhood.
