SGM David W. Carr LOM, DMSM MP SGT 35 years ago, I was an Infantry 2nd LT on my way to be stationed in Bamberg, FRG with the 1st BN 52nd Infantry Regiment. The previous spring I had graduated from USMA West Point, NY.

I was doing a tour with the Marines at El Toro and had a home in Mission Viejo. The best thing I did was buy that home so 6 years later it sold for much more and got me into a home west of Seattle that I lived in for 28 years.

I was living and working in Cincinnati, and a 1LT in the IRR. My wife was expecting our first child, our daughter who was born on March 8, just a few weeks later.

I was a senior in HS and playing in a lousy cover band. Though we did do decent versions of a couple Black Sabbath songs and Skynyrd's "Free Bird"...haha. I realized that wasn't my future. I enlisted a week after Pres. Reagan took office, my grandparents (they raised me) were quite relieved.

I was in the Marine Corps delayed entry program. Me and a bunch of my high school friends enlisted during the hostage crisis as we were sure we were going to war when Reagan took office.

My family lived near West Point back then. Although no one was in the military in our family yet, my mother took the day off work to greet them in the large crowds. I should have taken the day off from school.

Wow 35 years ago I was 16. Freshman in high school. I had no clue where my life was headed or what I was going to do once I was grown. The 70s were fun. All the Hippies were grown and parents. The girls I went to school with had names like: Precious, Dawn, Luvy, Peace, Delite, and others. It was a fun time.

I was standing on the Rhein Mein AB Tarmac waiting to board an aircraft to a Mideast location when their aircraft touched down. As the plane landed, the whole flight line erupted with cheers. It was a very emotional moment.
