I had been commissioned about a year when I was assigned this position and had the honor to lead the battalion convoy from Santa Barbara California to Camp Williams in Dugway proving grounds Utah. There I spend the next two weeks, usually 3 to 4 days in front of the Battalion main, learning the leadership challenges of a 10 person section comprised of very experienced and tactically sharp non-commissioned officers. All while tasked conducted survey operations and establishing battery firing points in a location that was wrought with iron ore. Firex 88 resulted in purportedly the largest live fire exercise at the time since Normandie and despite mini operational issues, the experiences were invaluable and unforgettable. Fortunately, I learned very early on to latch on to a strong noncommissioned officer who helped guide me. I owe the successes of my career to these non-commissioned professionals that I relied upon so dearly.

The leadership skills I obtained in the short period of time served me well my entire career.
