For so long in my life, “teamwork”, was lumped in with social status or some people were just not team members. That made me a lot more independent. However, in the military, you are pushed past those limitations and those that stay away from working with others find themselves forced to get the job done. A lot of friendships are made this way. Alternatively, sometimes people learn to stay away from certain ones but, you begin to find your people. “Your people” are the ones that you share a lot in common with and are able to foster some great relationships with others. I ran towards disaster instead of running away. The military (mostly the Marine Corps) gave me all the tools I needed to succeed. Putting those tools to the test was, hell, I don’t know how to put it. When the truck caught fire, I ran towards it. Didn’t matter there was a fully loaded and fueled C-141 just 20 feet away. When the H-3 crashed, I ran towards the crash. Didn’t think nothing of consequences. When we had to bring the C-130 crew to their first leg home after the crash it was tough. Sitting on 6 dead guys was indescribably horrible. It had to be done and I did it without much thought. Could I have done it as a civilian? I doubt it. I didn’t know my abilities back then. I’ve learned I can face difficult situations, even when my heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest. I’ve learned that I am a really good leader and I enjoy leading my troops from the front. I never in a million years thought I could and would be a good leader and here I am killin’ it, or so my soldiers say. I’ve learned I can work under pressure and most times, that is when I do my best work. I’ve learned I can rely on others; that I don’t have to do it all myself like I have my entire life.
But most importantly, I learned what it means to be apart of something greater than myself. I’ve learned the true meaning of family, what it means to have someone truly have your six no matter what, and what it means to be a true and fierce protector of all this great country has to offer. The most important thing that you can learn in the military is if you are capable of taking a life. I found that if it is the right thing to do, I could do it. I was sent to a psychiatric evaluation after the incident. The most important question I was asked was: Did it disturb you to kill someone? My answer was: It was the right thing to do. Off the coast of Vietnam I was asked by an Admiral to deliver a Top Secret folder to someone in Vietnam. I had a Civilian Secret Clearance that included a background investigation by the FBI. The Admiral felt that it was worth Top Secret. I asked how I would get there. He said by Helicopter since we were on an Aircraft Carrier. I agreed. After exiting the Helo I was given a .45 Automatic pistol, the keys to a jeep and a short map to a coffee shop where the person I was to meet was eating lunch. When I got to the coffee shop I decided to wait for him to come out and not disturb his meal. While I was waiting, I saw a woman with a very young boy approaching the coffee shop about 60 yards away. She kept pushing him. When they were closer I saw that the boy was wearing sticks of dynamite and she was holding a detonator. I yelled at her to stop. She laughed and kept pushing the boy towards the coffee shop. I drew my weapon and told her to stop or I would shoot her. She responded by pushing the boy harder. I told her one more step and I shoot. She took two steps and I shot her. As she was falling she pushed the detonator and blew them both to kingdom come. Everyone in the coffee shop came out to find out what happened. I told them. The man I was to meet was in the group and I handed him the folder from the Admiral. He wanted a more complete explanation. When I finished he said he was going to petition to get me the Medal of Honor for saving the lives of more than 50 military personnel who were eating inside. I told him NO, I did not join the Navy to win or earn medals. I joined to pay my country back for all the freedoms and benefits that I had simply because I was born in the United States. I asked him not to tell the Admiral what happened. I drove back to the Helicopter, turned in the .45 and said that 1 shot had been fired and why and then flew back to the ship. When I went to the Admirals Quarters to let him know the delivery was made he wanted the details of what I had done. He also wanted to get me the Medal of Honor and I told him the same thing I had told his friend. That was in 1964. When I was being released from Active Duty, before I could leave the ship, the Admiral asked me to sign a 50-year Non-Disclosure Agreement. I asked him why. He said it was to protect his family from knowing what he and I had done. I signed it not knowing that I would never be able to claim "Boots on the ground." CPO Jack De Merit Tue, 14 Sep 2021 21:09:45 -0400 2021-09-14T21:09:45-04:00 Response by SGT Larry Styer made Sep 14 at 2021 9:11 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-things-did-you-learn-about-yourself-that-were-unexpected-or-surprising-during-your-military-service-login-share-to-win?n=7269630&urlhash=7269630

The real Army is totally differant from the "Movie Army". My intent was not to stay in the service after my initial commitment (4 years). At the time, the Air Force was desperate to retain engineers so we bargained for the assignment after my initial tour was completed. That assignment led to me gaining expertise on special weapon security, which led to other related assignments (INF Treaty). In the end, I had two assignments as a commander and other roles that were out of the ordinary. Two factors may have played a part in my career - I was in the right place at the right time for certain assignments, or others smarter than me (there are a lot of these sort of people) saw something that I didn't. That said, I give credit for most of any success that I had to the NCOs who helped me develop as a young officer during my first assignment. He yelled, "At Ease! What the hell is going on?" "Sir! This moron ordered me to destroy this monitor, just to give him his first salute. I only have nine minutes left to get this upstairs, or make a phone call to shut down the flight school and have him sent to Ft Leavenworth. Physical limitations are mental limitations, you must tell yourself you can accomplish anything. Results don’t happen overnight. I’ve taken that into my civilian life, ran a successful business for 20 years and been a single dad of 4 magnificent kids. A couple tragic incidents in the Army have weighed me down Through the years but didn’t hold me back from achieving goals. The military separated us from the mentality that serves self and held us to a standard of camaraderie. I miss that the most and it simply isn’t available too much in the civilian platform. The closest I can get to that is serving veterans and being plugged in to groups like this. Thank you to all that have served this great country. Keep your head forward and your elbows and a**holes backwards! Oh… one more thing I learned. You know the old saying “watch pot, never boil?” Well… fire watch, never fire! All thru grammar school, Junior high, High school and junior collage, my grade average was in the middle of the class. When I joined the Navy Seabees, I attended Builder A school, and again in the middle of my class. After making BU2 I reenlisted. At that time I decided to really put all my potential into this career. Upon entering BU B school, I studied a minimum of 2 to 3 hours after school every day even if I had no homework. Making my self stick to this routine, I was able to achieve first in my class. At that point I knew I could do anything I put my mind to do and not just be average again.
After my military service I applied that lesson to everything I worked at. The physical demands where about the same, but the mental stress on the recruits was much different. I think several factors played into this. In 1960 we lived in Quonset Huts with 12 to 16 recruits to a hut and were not under the continuous watch of the DI, where as in 1972 the recruits were housed in 3 story barracks with 4 squad bays per floor. Each recruit platoon was housed in one squad bay and were almost constantly under the eye of the Drill Instructor. Another factor was the higher education of the recruits in the 70's. Most recruits were high school graduates. When I was a DI the Marine Corps was no longer receiving draftees which, I think, added to having better educated recruits. The most profitable item for black marketers' to purchase on base and sell off base was cigarettes. A carton of cigarettes purchased in the Post Exchange for $1.00 brought $10.00 on the black market. That was easy money until we caught you; then you could spend five years in a federal penitentiary act was a felony.
One evening while working at the main gate trying to prevent Philippine workers and military personnel from taking items off base to sell on the black market, we arrested a young African American airman with ten cartons of cigarettes in a duffle bag as he tried to leave the base.
The military police at the gate arrested him, called for a patrol to come pick him up and take him to headquarters. The patrol arrived in their jeep just as my duty time at the gate expired so I asked the patrol sergeant if I could ride back to the military police office with them. He said, “Sure” so I hopped in the back of the jeep with the handcuffed young black man. We started off with the senior sergeant driving, his partner, another sergeant, in the front passenger seat and I was in back with the prisoner.
About two miles down the road, the sergeant surprised me by pulled off the road into a picnic area set among a grove of trees. The dirt road curved behind some bushes, which sheltered the position from the view of vehicles passing on the main road. The sergeant driver stopped the jeep, both sergeants jumped out and brandished their nightsticks. The senior sergeant said, “Come on nigger, get your ass out here. You are going to fall down some stairs and raise some bumps on your head.”
Although I was only a corporal, I put my hand on the kid’s leg and said, “You sit still.” Then I said to the sergeants, “If we go back to the office now, I will forget this happened.” Both of the sergeants were silent for about thirty seconds then they started yelling at me, calling me a “nigger lover” and other racist names. As they became more abusive and approached the vehicle, I pulled my pistol out of the holster and l held it on my knee. This was a questionable move as both of them were armed and I had not yet loaded a bullet into the chamber of my pistol and the 'safety' was still on!
Fortunately, the appearance of my weapon settled them down a bit. They had not planned to have to murder a witness. Eventually they got back in the jeep and drove us to headquarters. Cussing at both of us all the way. When we arrived at the headquarters, the sergeants dismounted from the jeep and called the airman to go with them. I watched the three of them enter the jail. Then I crawled out of the jeep, my knees were shaking. I never heard anything more about the incident and I never saw those sergeants again.
African Americans were not known to me as I had never encountered them in my small, all white town in up-state New York. In the Air Force I had not interacted with them as whites and blacks did not mix socially. This incident opened my eyes and I have fought racial injustice sense then.

Paul Valentine, Capt. The biggest thing was I learned who I was. So many kids today grow up confused about who they are and what they can do and end up turning to all the wrong things in life. I was headed down that path as well. But my experiences helped me grow up and deal with issues. Instead of hiding behind bad things. Or using dangerous things to mask my fear and anger, I turned to the truth. I can see why so many young adults turn to “society” to help them feel better. But that’s not what works.

Doing the hard work of getting yourself out of trouble and not choosing the easy way out is the best long term solution. While in high school the only classes I took seriously was Math, English, and Drafting, because that was what interested me the most. I had dropped out with three months left to go and my high school grades weren't that great to begin with, to go into the "Navy". I scored high on the ASVAB test which was surprising to me and was assigned to a "GMM - Gunners Mate Missile" rating. The time I went in you didn't need a high school diploma but had to obtain a GED and my best friend went in with me. I went thru basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, and some naval schools before going to the fleet and serving onboard the "USS California CGN 36". The one thing that amazed me was going thru "Basic, Electricity and Electronics" school and being a self paced course went thru it pretty fast, just kept completing my school courses, then thru an "A" school and that's what hooked me about education. I learned who the best person in the class was and chased his grade by studying to be better than he was and along the way I learned I was really smart but didn't use it because I was lazy and had no direction in my life. This situation changed my entire life and I dedicated myself to performing at high standard and to this day I remember were I started and how far came and if it wasn't for the "Navy" providing guidance and structure I would have drifted into a different life and wouldn't be where I'm at today.
The other thing I learned was hard work pays off, I could work hard already because my mom instilled in all seven of us in my family the sense if you work hard good things will come to you. Once I arrived onboard the "USS California" I was put with a small group of "GMM's" on the aft guided missile launcher, being the new guy wanted to impress them and fit in. I worked very hard at learning the missile system and performing "PM's". I put in some long hours on that missile system after the other "GMM's" left for the day just to catch up with what they already know which would put me on an even keel with them. I finally gained their respect and trust but I didn't let off. I kept the bar high for myself at what ever I did and over time gained a lot of knowledge of my work area and the ship but I still remained humble because I didn't want to offend anyone I just wanted to be part of the team. I can work quite well alone, and do it often but I work even better with in a team setting because the collaboration of everyone is what makes things go better.
I'm not saying it was easy, this type of life is structured for a reason because you need a certain amount of discipline to handle whatever comes at you especially the hard choices a person or team have to make and live with the consequences. What I learned along the way I passed it on to my four grown boys and that work ethic that have was instilled into them. My wife and kids have been through some hard times but in them we grew together and if you ask any of my boys what time of their life they remember was the best was when I was living in public housing, going to college, working as a part time college security officer and working once a month for the "Oregon Food Bank" unloading trucks of food to disperse thru the community food banks. There was no pay for doing this it was volunteer but at the end of it you got a few food boxes which I took home and gave some of it away to people in the low income housing area where we lived.
Filling out this response makes me reflect on the what ifs in my life, and not to long ago my son asked me if I had a good life. This question threw me for a loop haven't though much about my life and the path I took to get here today, but I told him that there wasn't anything I wouldn't change or regretted not doing because I did what was needed to keep the family together, fed and safe. I was asked by the Logistics Officer of the state to give a briefing to a few people, and when I went to the podium I was in front of well over 250 individuals, to include some high ranking National Guard Officers. My time in the military had given me the confidence to speak to anyone, anywhere at any time about what I knew and what my opinion was concerning current operations. From a young man who jumped when someone said boo, to a seasoned Warrant Officer who was confident in what he knew is the main thing that the military taught me during my tenure. As oldest of 7 my parents ultimately had, was told by my dad that firstborn (NOT first male) is responsible for younger siblings when parents are no longer able to be responsible for their children--when the children become orphaned, firstborn must step in.

Which leads to next point: what applies to men in no way apply to women. With a few days remaining in emergency leave I had been given to deal with death of my mother, I went to my recruiter to request leave of absence. If I had been firstborn male, I might have been told there was no such thing & would have been offered hardship discharge instead.

Though my maternal grandfather died while his son was in the Army, there were other siblings to look after my grandmother--& they were all grown up, with families of their own. To my knowledge, mine was first family to become orphaned while oldest male AND female were in military service, & we had nobody to tell us anything about military life or protocol--both of us went in with tabula rasa (clean slate; knowing nothing--ignorant). My brother & I have never spoken about his military service so I have no way of knowing how much he knows. My platoon was halfway through Boot when I attended only UCMJ class, & only thing I remember from that class is that ignorance is no excuse. My brother & I had both been discharged when he told me that military personnel have rights that cannot & must not be violated. It is only in last 21 years since learning I could call myself a veteran that I have learned I had been discriminated against--according to gender AND culture.

During these last 2 decades, I have also learned that many of my brothers- & sisters-at-arms have been bound to non-disclosure, denying them all merit that they deserve; by same token Armed Forces/DoD can not only fail to disclose, they can mask their statements/disclosure with ambiguities. After announcing the change, she called me to the office to share that she had two lines of people coming to her. One line, my people asking her to keep me in my job. The second line, the people from the other department asking her not to send me to the other office. When I left the unit, the people that didn’t want me to go to their department were crying on my farewell! Needless to say this was troublesome at times. I had similar situations in civilian life!
