First off, make sure you are ready to go. I know many situations may dictate otherwise and you might not have a choice. In that case, make sure you have a plan. Don't wait to the last minute to established short and long term goals.

Get started early. Have a good resume for the civilian sector, and the government side too of you are interested in that. Ask others for copies of good ones. Let your contacts and connections know you are transitioning. You also need to decide if your priority is location or money; sometimes you can't make them both connect. Save your money.

Job, housing, school, etc. all lined up is great practical advice but here is a little outside the box. Don't throw away your uniforms and other things. I know often times when we discharge we are thinking you want nothing to do with that stuff ever again or that you'll never need it again. 20 years after separating I am getting involved with veteran's groups and wish I had some of the stuff that I apparently three out somewhere along the line.

Also, get involved with a veteran's group! It'll do wonders for you at some point, no matter your experiences or issues, you will benefit from knowing others that have been in your boots.

File your VA Claim BEFORE you transition out. It gets streamlined this way and you get a decision (and your money, LOL) MUCH faster.
