anything by Jimmy Buffet or The Eagles, they were staples in the pool room during weekend pool nights. Also Rednex Cotton Eyed Joe which seemed to be playing somewhere almost constantly when I was in Turkey in 95.

I'll try to tell the short version... First off, the song is Me and Bobby McGee. We're in the Tonkin Gulf. 1971. The carrier MIDWAY. A month earlier we get this E-3 striker in our division. He plays that one song constantly on his little cassette player. Everywhere, all the time. That song. Finally, I just couldn't take it any longer. I was standing the Quartermaster Plot Watch on the Navigation Bridge, 0000-0400. There I was in the Charthouse. There was the cassette player WITH that uber-disgusting Janis Joplin tape inside it. No one around. Massive South China Sea everywhere. Complete, black, moonless darkness.

To this day, that 60-some-year-old former sailor has no idea where his cassette player and tape went.

Hmm...I have two songs that take me back to Ft Benning:

I had the song Lights by Journey stuck in my head for WEEKS while I was at OSUT. When it comes on the radio now, I can see myself in our bay--avoiding the Kill Zone at all costs--cleaning weapons or the latrine or getting ready to leave for a range, chow, etc.

The other song that reminds me of my time at Benning, is Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson. The reason why is that after our final FTX, while were cleaning everything and getting ready to graduate, move on and be soldiers, we were allowed 2 special benefits: 1. Coffee...'nuf said. 2. We could go to the Sand Hill Shoppette and burn a couple disks worth of music to play in the bay while we cleaned, and for some reason Dirty Diana, one of the songs we burned, struck a cord with our platoon and was frequently repeated.

Maybe not the best of memories, but, We gotta Get Out of This Place, as well as Black is Black. Definitely bring back memories of another place and time.

Killswitch Engage - Rose of Sharyn. It was literally the first song I heard as a Marine and it's just been imprinted on me with good memories every time I hear it.
