What should happen when a student arrives at a school and he or she fails the APFT?

<p>What should happen to their PREVIOUS UNIT'S CHAIN OF COMMAND (who said he or she passed a test on their last evaluation)?</p><p><br></p><p>What does that say about the student's previous UNIT?</p><p><br></p><p>Should any of this be factored into separation boards (In Regards to Leadership)?</p><p><br></p><p>Also consider failing by MINUTES and DOUBLE DIGIT Reps.</p><p>Exclude profiles.</p><p><br></p><p>What should happen to the student (not as important as the above questions)?</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>

They should receive a "Failed to meet course standards" 1059 and sent home. I'm pretty sure that's standard. As a matter of fact, I'm staring at an Army Directive from 2012 that states exactly that..

Agreed. There are thousands of young people competing for that spot - if the soldier doesn't want to meet standards, replace him with one who does.

I believe that the SM should definitely receive a negative 1059. We also need to find a way to make their unit accountable. If they are failing to screen their schools candidates there needs to be consequences.

If you fail the test when you arrive, I believe you probably shouldn't have been there in the first place. Going to an NCOES school requires a PT test within the last 30 days. If you failed the one at the school you probably failed, or didn't take at all, the one you took to be able to go. When I went through PLDC we had a few Soldiers unable to complete more than 10 push-ups. It is the unit's fault they were there unprepared. Everyone who is trying to advance there career should be able to set the standard when it comes to basics. It is the unit's job to get the Soldier to where they need to be. It is the Soldier's duty to stay there and exceed at it.

If passing a PT Test is a requirement, then the candidate is sent back to the home station with his record so indicating. I believe that home units are required to certify that the school candidate is qualified BEFORE sending the candidates. That element should be reviewed as well.

In my opinion, I think a student who fails a APFT, among entering a school, especially a NCOES school or Drill Sergeant should get counseled and dismissed. The perception or intent should be a highly squared away Soldier to lead, train and mentor your subordinates. I went to Drill Sergeant School and Airborne School and it was either go/no-go criteria 1st time basics. Remember its not basic training or OCS the standards should be exceeded before you get there with at least 70% or higher.

Right on, how can you hold others accountable if are not able to be accountable.
I would have expected my 1SG to be embarrassed if they let a guy go to an NCOES not ready. That never happened but I have heard and seen it happen. So I have wondered what goes through the leadership's head when they send a dud to a school. What would happen if they where held accountable. How can a leader have been considered a success if he or she let their Soldiers/Leaders embarrass them be failing the only test that all the answers are in the back of the book.
I meet people who have led and wonder how they fail but move on, APFT is not the only thing but it is the easiest.
Formations by themselves are not what matters but results do. You hit that in your comment. I am in violent agreement with you.

Passing a PT test should be second nature. It doesn't matter whether you are attending a professional course or it is a regular PT test. One should always be ready. It's not rocket science!

As a Soldier you should be ready at any time it take and pass a PT test. And getting a seat for school is a privilege not only should the unit make sure the Soldier is ready, the Soldier should make sure he/she is well prepared and be able to exceed the standard.

The first thing that should happen is the soldier should be embarrassed. The minimum standards on the APFT are very low. Excluding injuries, if you don't pass, you might want to consider another line of work.

Agreed, but my concern some will get eliminated from the Army who meet the standard while others who do not continue in ALL ranks. I've moved on of my own accord but will continue with NG. I picked a unit that answered this question really well. The chain of command wants to enforce the standard and then build on the entire base. Not just one's performance matters if we do not give way together. That wins my loyalty.

The soldier's home unit is partially responsible as well. He should have been tested BEFORE he departed for training.
