In addition to straightening out the mess, especially as pertained to the processing of Medivacs, I had to compose letters to the next of kin of KIAs. When I learned that I had to compose letters on behalf of the chaplains, I went to the division chaplain for some help. He handed me a Bible and told me to pick out something "appropriate". Now, I had perused a Bible or two in my youth but never read it from cover-to-cover. I won't belabor the details of my hunt. Suffice it to say, I eliminated the New Testament and stuck with the Old, and settled on, "I lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my strength. My strength cometh from the Lord who made the Heavens and Earth." Now I may not be quoting that accurately, but the substance of that passage always stuck with me. Then, while visiting the Reagan Library, my wife found me crying in a corner. When she asked what was the matter, I pointed her to a video that was looping on a monitor. It was President Reagan talking about his beloved ranch and in it he mentioned his favorite passage from the Bible which happened to be the same I had chosen so many years before. Hopefully, those loved ones of those Vietnam KIAs took as much comfort from that passage as did President Reagan and I.
